OK.
I've always put lube in the transfer case until it started coming out the fill hole.

Went to change it today. Had a couple quarts o' lube, couldn't remember capacity, so I checked:

1.4 qts according to the manual (FSM was not nearby).

Drained, got what looked like almost 2 quarts out.

Filled to about 1.5 quarts, but it was not "full" as I understood it--it wasn't up to the fill hole yet.

Double checked capacity in my Haynes manual:
1.4 qts with ABS
1.7 qts without ABS

I've got ABS, but 1.4 quarts does not get me all the way to the fill hole.

Do you fill until it comes out the hole? Or do you stop at stated capacity?

Am I making too much of 0.3 quarts?

Fill till it's coming out. That's when I stop and put the plug back in.

IIRC, my fill was in the 1.8 quart neighborhood. Not sure why there's a discrency though.

Yep-It's 1.8. Fill untill it runs out, Install plug, then forget about it for a year.

That's what I've always done, but never really paid attention to the stated capacity until now.
Strange discrepancy.
I'll keep filling as I have.
Thanks.

For some reason the FSM is off on these things. Another example is the trans fluid. My LX took more then the service manual stated. I think your safe to asume that the fill plug is right and the manual is incorrect.

Haynes manual may say 1.4 qts, but FSM manual says 1.8 qts. Also FSM says to fill until the level is 5mm below the fill hole, not spilling out the fill hole like the front & rear diffs (MA-4). But I've always filled all three until it starts oozing out, like everyone else.

An educated guess is that in US, if you have ABS, you have a viscous coupler, which consumes space inside the transfer case, which means less room for gear oil.

My owners manual for my '96 shows 1.4 IMP qts or 1.8 US qts. FSM shows 1.5 IMP qts or 1.8 US qts.
