I have an 87 shortbed with a 3" or 4" Rancho susp lift and I'm getting an all stock 87 4runner. I want to put the susp lift on the 4runner and put the stock susp on the shortbed.
I don't think the pick up is different from the 4runner but I'm not sure.
Can I swap everything from my shortbed to the 4runner??

Also, My shortbed has 5.29's that I would like to swap into the 4runner.
In your opinion.... would it be easier to swap the whole axles or just the 3rd's??
I would rather change the whole front axle because the shortbed has manual hubs and the 4runner has automatic hubs.

Thanks for any help.

Yes, yes and take the auto hubs off and get locking ones.....

and WELCOME!!! :flipoff2: <newb salute!

Yes the IFS, or what makes it a lift anyway, is the same thing.

Yes swap the 3rds .....not the gears.

And the auto hubs IMO should come off just get some factory ones to replace. And if you can change yer oil you'll see how to swap the hubs...it's that easy

.............newb :flipoff2:

hold up isnt the rear in a 4runner coil springs??? or is that just in the 89 and up models?

Look thinks over verrry carefully before you start swapping parts. Last I knew, the Rancho front IFS suspension lift involved cutting out some of the original frame mounts and welding in the new parts. Maybe it's different now, but when I saw one of those installed last (probably 5 years ago) it was pretty much impossible to put back to stock form, kinda like un-doing a SAS job.

4Runners changed to coils in the rear in the 2nd generation model, '90 and up.

1990 and up 4runners used rear coils. 84-88(89 4Runner) suspension is identical between the pickups and 4Runners

Thanks for the replys.

I'm not new, my puter crashed a while back and I lost my passwords. I bought a new Dell, and Vista & my new anti-virus is giving me greif. It won't let me see my old webmail.

Anyways....
I looked at my pick up, I does not look like anything was cut off the frame. I did not get the 4runner yet so I have nothing to compare to though.

Here are some pic's, maybe someone can tell from them.

Here is my pick up. Some of you might remember it from a year or so ago when I posted pic's of it. Its kinda hard to forget with the fiberglass step-side bed.:p It had a double roll bar and a push bar/brush gaurd but I took them off, I left the 4-point roll cage in the cab.;)

I'm kinda hopeing the swap won't work because then that'll push me to buy the 85 4runner. :D
I can buy an stock 87 for $550, its a grey/grey SR5 22re 5speed. It has a little rust on the 1/4's, the back window don't work and the guy says there is a battery drain, he thinks its the alternator.
OR
I can buy a stock 85 for $400, its a grey/grey SR5 22re 5speed. It looks like swiss cheese (even the rockers), the only good metal on it is the hood and tailgate. There is plastic missing/broken in the back and there is a garbage bag over the pass seat covering some black tar looking stuff. It has a PA reconstructed title but the guy has owned it since 1986. The motor should be strong, he had it completely rebuilt a few years back. New everything, head work, better cam, & balanced.
They both have been sitting for a couple years.
I've been looking for a 4runner for months. I want a nice looking semi-lifted 4runner with grey SR5 interior, it will see more street than wheeling.
I wanted an 84 or 85 'just because' but could not find many. I expanded my search to any 1st gen runner, looking for something I could pick up fairly cheap and put right on the road and be able to drive it and wrench on it as time and money allowed.
I want the 85 but it would take a lot of work to get it to where it'll pass inspection, the 87 would pass inspection. :bang:

Does anyone know where to get 4runner body panels??
I looked into toyotafiberglass.com but they are in Canada and it would cost almost $1,000 to have two 1/4's shipped here.

Oopps sorry for rambling on.
Any input, thoughts, or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Bah don't bother for all the hassle its gonna be to install that ifs you should just source more sas parts and get er done.

I wish they would have inverted that lower crossmember....

I don't have the money to SAS it right now, and like I said it will mostly see streets so I don't care if its IFS or not.

KLF,
Can you tell from the pic's if its a bolt-on rancho or if stuff was cut??

It looks bolt-on to me, actually, but it's hard to be sure. I do see lots of idler arms in your future, maybe you can buy them by the dozen?

My opinion: Other than for poser looks, I see NO REASON to install an IFS lift like that. It doesn't increase wheel travel, and it puts a severe strain on your CVs and steering parts.

TT,...if you don't see any welds....

And KLF, I though Rancho was the ONLY kit that added travel?

KLF,
You hit the nail on the head!
With me having a wife & four (4) small kids, waaaay to many other hobbies, very limited 'me time', a house on 3 acres, a cabin in the mountains, 2 dogs, 2 campers, a 4wheeler, 3 snowmobiles, 2 canoes, a tricked out eclipse with nitrous, 4 other vehicles (this 4runner will be a 6th vehicle between me & the wife), a shed full of wood working tools and two lathes for another hobby, ect, ect, ect, Put all that on top of VERY limited places to wheel (actually 1 in PA) and yes it will be more of a poser-moble than an able rig.
I'm ok with that.

I had my pickup wheeling at Rausch last year and it worked great. I only had it a little over a year but never had any problems with the IFS and rancho lift.

I looked at the 85 again tonight and took pic's.
Here they are, do you think its worth $400???????

The good side.

Rule #1 in the Toyota hand book says NEVER pass on an EFI 85.....

I guess you didn't see that rule?...edit...I guess ya did. ;p ...i love that rule..

:flipoff2:

other than never washing it...it looks like its taken care of...nothings missing? The distributer cover is there looks like factory radio...

That thing is worth $400 for sure. I paid $1000 for my 84 4Runner in similar (RUST) condition to that. It ran like a top so I didn't mind all the rust. That is not an easy vehicle to come across, rusty or not. One thing about it though, is check the frame rails really well. Bring a hammer and a punch/screwdriver and pound on that puppy a little bit and check for soft spots. That thing could be relatively worthless if the frame is about to give out.
