I got this crazy notion too, over 10 years ago, and have been imagining and designing in my head ever since. I've seen many threads where people have done it, but I'm trying to go even simpler than most have done and not have to build a housing adapter. My thought is to make a flange to fit on the front of the 2nd tranny to use it as a divorced set up. I'll have two complete trans/case sets to put together. The front case will have a rear flange to use for mating to the 2nd tranny w/custom flange. The front case would become a 10spd PTO for a winch more so than being needed for any gearing. The second tranny would, of course, be a 5spd range box and the second case would be for the 4wd. No matter how big or small the trannies used are, I'd say attention to the skinny pedal is the best way to keep everything in working order.
It seems you're thinking about it in terms of road use and I am thinking about it almost solely for offroad use; So with that in mind, Let me tell you that you'd never be using both trannies to shift at the same time. You COULD do it, as the front clutch should work for both transmissions simultaneously, but you'd essentially be splitting every gear into 4 or 5 speeds (depending on 4 or 5spd trans). Imagine splitting ANY 1st gear into 5 speeds, the highest of which would only be your actual 1st gear. By the time you got through your first 5 gear changes, you'd only be in "1st" and doing maybe 5-10mph. Yes, for farm use, moving trailers and pulling stumps, it could be useful, but it won't help nearly as much on the highway unless you're kinda like a semi - big engine with a small torque range.
All that said, I say do it! It's a sweet setup and you'll get the biggest grin on your face every time you hop in to drive it. And the look on peoples faces when they see something like that is priceless too.
