Before I do this SOA conversion i was thinking about making some lockable drop out shackles. Does anyone have some pictures of drop out shackles I can base mine off of?

Whats a drop out shackle? Is it like those "Revolver" shackles the Jeep guys seem to like?

Whatever you come up with make them short because after an SOA that 42 is going to be really tall. Unless tall is what you are after of course.

Its kind of like the teraflex things. Ok so picture a normal shackle. Take a smaller shackle and put it inside the first shackle. Connect the two shackles (so the inside shackle can move independently then the outside shackle) now take your leaf springs and attach them to the inside shackle. When the shackle moves when your articulating your axle the inside shackle can swing out from the outer shackle. Giving you a couple more inches of flex. Im planning on putting 38 inch super swamper tsl sx's on it.... When i can afford them

Be very careful with these, I have heard they like to unload when going down hills. With SOA you will have enough flex, or go longer springs is better for flex and ride.

I think im going to see how much flex i get with just the soa. If i dont like it im going to modify the teraflex shackles so i can lock them so it just becomes one shackle and unlock it when i need the articulation.

I've heard this from lots of people who don't have them but I have yet to find someone who had them that says this... maybe I should give them a shot to see how bad it is...

Longer Springs are the better way, gives more flex and better ride. I use 60 rear all way round and they work great most of the VI guys have witnessed this too.

x2 with the 60 series rear springs. They work really well on a 42.

Just push the shackle hangers back a little on the rear, front is a little more effort, but not a ton.

You can even use 60 front springs on the front of a 42, and they fit really nicely.

With those dropout shackles, you can do an experiment to see what they'll give you, just take the bolt out of a shackle and flex the truck. If your springs are something like a stiff lift spring, you'll be surprised how little the spring comes away from the shackle.

I made some once, many many moons ago before I went soa, and they didn't open at all. Once I was soa, it became a non issue. More than enough flex.

Was a guy in the states building a setup where the shackle end wasn't attached to anything at all, just fit into a slot built for it. Kinda sketchy looking...

I was on google images looking up Toyota pickups when i saw these images. Thinking about making these instead of teraflex ones. The first picture would be the locked position for street use and what not so it acts as one shackle. But when I need the flex I take out the pins and then i have way more flex.

Or instead of a pin holding it in place using a cable lock system so i can just pull a lever on the dash to unlock the 2nd shackle.

Im not entirely sure, but wont these shackles mess up your pinion angle?

Only under droop, and at that point the speeds are so slow it wont create any problems.

My guess Curt, is that your 42 already has 60 front springs and whatever you do it will work better than what you've got now.

Yup anything would work better then what i have right now.

HI,

I'm making some kind of drupout shackles, but in my case they will have a butterfly lock so if I'm driving on the highway they should work like normal shackles do. I will post some picture.
this is just the parts I recently cut.

Seen these things work in Texas, they do very well...

Inherant issue is extreme unloading, lots of guys use center limiting straps or winch to axle..

They can work with proper set up.. But in saying that I only remember one rig having them out of 50 rigs..:beer::beer:

Well I did some progress tonight

I will post more pics when I finish the first pair I have still to machining some part and do the welding .
the main difference is that I will place the lock pin in between the two miving parts .
