Driveshaft Phase Vibrations Gone Success!!!!

Got my DS back from the shop. Put it in and BAM!! No more vibes! I replaced the U joints with OEM and still had vibes. Checked the phasing and it is correct as per the FSM. Check out the weights he added in the photos. There were 2 weights on there already from the factory> The ones in the photos were added by the machine shop. I highly recommend the guys at Bergers Machine shop in Hagerstown, Md!

Ok guys. I replaced my rear ujoints with OEM this weekend. still having vibes. I have searched and read and read and searched. My questions are

When it is discussed to rotate your driveshaft 180 deg are we talking the whole shaft or splitting the two halves and rotating 180?

When I removed it I did not sperate the 2 but I'm not sure what the PO may have done. I put it all back together the way it came off. both flanges are tight with no play. Iam not feeling any issues when rotating the flanges. no crunching or binding. no leaks either.

Does someone have pics with specific detailed instructions?

I called a driveline shop today and will be taking it in for balance if I cannot resolve this by rotating the shaft.

Again should I rotate the entire shaft 180 or just one half of it?

It's in the FSM under propeller shaft - there's a diagram on proper phase, by lining up your grease nipples. For front and rear shaft, together.

Download the pdf in my sig if you don't have it.

pull the drive shaft apart and rotate it 180* and put back together. If you think its out of balance, find some hose clamps that will fit around it and play with their position.

yeah, If were to draw a line down the shaft both ujoints would be in the same position. kinda tough to describe without a picture.

FWIW my FJ40 liked have having the rear shaft out of phase by 180*, in phase it would have a vibration.

also make sure the is not a ton of slop in the yoke. it should have a little bit of play not a lot.

<<sigh>>

The procedure is clear in the FSM - Is it too much to download and read ?

It's not just lining up the zerks - you have to view them from one end of the shaft (I forget which end) and the zerks should be 30* or so of each other to phase the U joints. There's more, but it's been a while and I don't want to give you bad info.

i'm at work on an air card. cannot dowload that big of a file.

I had mine balanced and new OE U-joints installed by the same So Cal drive shaft shop that TLC4x4 uses. FWIW, when I got the shafts back, they were out of phase. You have to check everything, these daze ...

Spike Did you use Wenco? Over by Van Nuys Air Port.

I've used General Driveshaft in Monrovia 2x and been very happy. They're not cheap but they'll pick up, drop off, and measure for the correct length. I've never even met them. I call & give them my contact & payment info. My driveshaft is gone when I get home from work & a few days later it's back in driveway.

Yup - Mark A. also told me an unhappy experience he had with them. Next time, I go elsewhere.

Noted. Thanks, Seth. .... General Driveshaft sounds like a character from "American Dad"
:)

I took the rear DS out and drove it tonite. Still had some vibes but I think they are coming from the front. I'll address that next. It was noticably different. I checked the phase and it looks good. I'll be taking the DS to a machine shop in Hagerstown Md for the balance. Talked to the guy today. They were recommended by a local speed shop. They send all of thier customers there with great results!

Funny how I have never paid attention to the zirks when I put my driveshafts back together and I have never had a driveline vibration. I do pay attention that the yokes for the spiders line up just like the FSM.

I was under the impression that "phase" applied to lining up the yokes at each end of the shaft not the zirks.

I have also read that phase doesn't apply to a double carden driveshaft, anybody have some input if this is true or not?

Dude. I used to live at Whidbey when I was in The Navy! Beautiful place! A little rainy for my liking but I had some great times there! I got arrested wheeling in Ft Eby State park. That sucked! Island county Sherrifs always seemed to be there when you least wanted them to be. Thats what I get for following someone I did'nt know who said.... I know a great place to wheel!! LOL

They have got Ebey all blocked off now with gates etc. Its all set up for mtn bikes now. How long ago were you here? I got out of the Navy in 86 but came back here about 15 years ago. Still raining by the way, including today!

As for tech, I found a great explanation about phase. Driveline Basics with Steve Johnson - ORN

I got there in 1988 and left in 1991. I was in VP-69 as an AT. We used to wheel at another place out near I think it was called Admirals Cove? It was accross from Admirals cove. It was a fun spot!
