I guess Toyota didn't think too highly of its potential buyers back in the 80s, because they put the super annoying door lock feature that requires me to hold up the handle of the door when closing it so that it remains locked. I'm a big boy now and if I want to lock my keys in the car, darn it that's what I will do! :)

Does anyone know how to defeat this feature? I had a look around the narrow rear door but couldn't figure anything obvious out. I'm assuming it's the same setup on all 3 doors, and before I start tearing into the lock mechanism I thought perhaps someone had already done this and could point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I sure hope your next post isn't asking folks how to get keys out of a locked Cruiser. : )

Good luck! I remember a couple of the old Toyotas my parents had when I was a kid had small indentations above the door handles from their thumbs pushing the door closed with the handle up.

I disassembled the back door and had to cut off this little tab. Put it all back together and works like a charm!

Will report back if it's the same procedure for the two front doors.
