Dog containment - invisible fence - electronic shock - any suggestions?

BUMP... go get one. This ain't rocket science.

Electric fences won't work on stupid and/or stubborn dogs. They've cross over it anyway.

My sister's dalmation learned to sit close to the fence while the collar beeps, 'till the collar battery dies.

Works great on my dog. Some dogs just get up enough speed to go through quickly.

We got a PetSafe off of eGay for around $240. Works really well.
One drawback, lots of fresh dogshits inside the perimeter.

Put a small dab of loctite on the threads of the collar contacts but not to hinder the shock. If you lose one, they're around $6 each from Petsafe.

I love our Invisible Fence. I leave the collar off most of the time. Every few months she wanders over the line by mistake and figures out that she didn't get shocked and then I have to put the collar back on for a few days. It only takes a few beeps for her to remember again. I think she's only been actually shocked by the thing about three times in the 5 years we've had the fence.

"You have to be the pack leader" :D

Ceasars' the s***, no doubt about it.

I've used the wire signal fence with varied success. It works great for training them to stay off counters, couches, and doors when you aren't there. Negative re-inforcement without you being the bad guy.
They work well to establish boundaries but the second or third time they cross the line it's over, When the reward is greater than the deterent the mice sniff the coke.

There is a collar system that has a constant signal boundary. It trips when they lose signal so they don't just cross the line and go.

I've an eight month old shepherd that's going into heat and it's the system I'm going to get next.

Pet Safe makes a radio fence that sends out an adjustable containment area. Just plug it in, put the collar on the dog, and you are set.We bought ours at Home Depot, and love it. Took about 10 minutes for the dog to catch on, and she hasn't gotten out since. We don't even need to put the collar on her any more.
The best part is that we can take the fence anywhere we go (Parents house...in-laws...etc) and our dog isn't running all over.

I recommend it to anyone.

How much was it? Way easier and better than wire.

Unless you put one on every male dog in a 10 square mile area, you're wasting your time.

LOL!

She never leaves my sight, and never goes out without my golden. He's 100+ and should buy me the minute window (I hope).

She never jumped the fence until she went into heat (granted there wasn't a four foot snow bank to help her over the fence). By the time I can hop the fence it'll be too late. I'll have stupid hippie dog hybrids.

try training you dog. My bouncy Lab doesn't ever go near a road or out the yard -ever - taught her at 4 months and she's got it down cold. TRAIN YOUR DOG.

There's no doubt that for the invisible fence to work well you also and first have to do intensive training. Once it's ingrained, the collar works as a reinforcer/reminder. It won't replace the initial training. What's been nice, though, is that as the years go by, it seems like the temptation to cross/test it has gone way down.

We pretty much put the collar (we call it his "play collar" and use a cheerful voice while applying it) on every day, however, because snow dogs are born to wander.

She's well trained. Although I bolt the lock she will open doors on command (I'm working on "high five" now for closing). In addition to "answering" the door she will get the phone when it rings. She started learning the second I got her. She couldn't be stupid if she tried (unless I train her to play dumb). Mother nature keeps me on my toes though. I suspect her recent jumps (twice now) are a direct result of "heat" and should go in a few weeks.

I'm waiting until then to start search and rescue training. She's too easily distracted right now.

I've found winter to be a hard time to have a pup (first non-summer pup I've owned). She loves the treadmill though. That wears her down for "work" time.

word.

at least you'll know they'll be boning her in your yard and not some stranger's yard.

I'm sure I'll feel the same way when it's my daughters window we're talking about.

Is there a "morning after" pill for pooches? :hhmm:

along with a date rape doggie snack.

It's called the humpty-dumpty package.

Negative ghost rider. When the poodle went into heat she scaled a four foot chain link fence, yelping through the shocks from the containment system, to get out.
