I have found a dog that I've fallen in love with(even though I havent seen him). I found him on adoptagoldenatlanta.com but I have some concerns.

1. He has Heartworms. Is this something that can be corrected? I don't really know much about them.

2. The adoption fee seems pretty high? I can buy a puppy golden for that price. But I really would like to save him:frown:

This would be my first time to adopt a animal. We have 3 dogs at home, but this one would be mine and live with me in my apartment. However he would get to go outside a lot and he would be able to go home most weekends and live outside with our other dogs.

Any input? Orphan Golden Retrievers at Adopt a Golden Atlanta - Golden Retriever Rescue Organization Serving the Southeast

300 adoption fee and then 500 for treatment for heartworms to have a dog that lives another 5 years? Noble cause, but price sure is steep. Tell them you will treat him for heartworms if they just give him to you for nothing.

No kidding, you can probably get a purebread golden puppy for less than $800

Looking what they are charging for their "adoption fees", that's one bulls***-ass "rescue" organization. Non-profit my ass:meh:

tofu can clarify but i think heartworm can only be prevented, not fixed.

they can be cured. pricey, though, and the treatments can kill the dog. last I remember, they used arsenic to kill the worms. that might have changed, though.

I really would like to save him, but I can get this little guy for $350.

save him!!... you know that golden pup will find a home in no time. who knows how long the sick dog will sit in a cage. he needs you and he'll make a better companion in the long run. rescue dogs know what you've done for them and they are grateful.
having 3 dogs already heart worm treatment will be difficult, but possible if you have the time. it's a long process, but well worth it in the end.
good luck
