Does the xfer case have a vent, and if so, where is it?

I have searched the archives for the vent location and found nothing definetive.
My xfer case seems to be producing alot of pressure. It is blowing gear oil through the threads in the FILL plug. I have not tried sealing the threads yet with teflon or perma gasket yet. I am using a copper crush washer instead of a flat washer.

Any ideas?

This is really pissing me off!
It's blowing oil all over the bottom of the truck!

GRRRRRRRRRRR!

Yes, there is a breather vent on the split t-case. It's on the very top of the front half, a little button sticking up. It's really tight in there, hard to reach your hand in to feel it. Unfortunately it's a press-in vent, not a threaded connection. What you might be able to do is disconnect the forward end of the rear driveshaft, then put a jack under the tranny, unbolt the crossmember, and lower the whole thing down to reach it. Spray liberally with brake cleaner to get it loosened up.

Odd that the gear oil is leaking past the fill plug, I would think that if the t-case was pressurizing that it would leak past the output flange seals first. The OEM gasket that's supposed to be under the plugs is soft aluminum, not copper. Might try these?

There's something wrong! It would take alot of pressure to blow gear oil past a tight fill plug. Pressure would take the path of least resistance, the blow hole on top or a seal. Is that fill plug tight?

It's impossible to get to that vent without dropping the transfer case, and it's impossible to replace it without disassembling the transfer case - you pretty much have to drill it out. At the 3FE bash we tapped the hole and installed breather tubes to extend with hose - it turned out to be quite difficult to get a nipple on there that wouldn't interfere with the tight fit of the transfer against the body - there is NO space up there.

good luck

That's not the answer I was hoping for!
Would it be easier to just cut a big hole out of the floorpan?

I JUST did a clutch job on my old 60' less than a year ago!
Now I basially have to do it again.....I know BOO HOO me!

Welll, thanks for the help guys and happy holidays!

Is the transfer case pumping oil into the transmission ?

Somebody double check my thinking on this but wouldn't the trans/transfer case oil return kit work in this situation ?

By linking the trans and transfer cases together it would relieve the pressure and stabilitze the level of oil in both cases ?

Until you get it fixed, just enjoy the free undercoating your truck is recieving. Mine got quite the nice coat of Rotella T-Syn 5w40 when I forgot to tighten the drain bolt appropriately, good to have before the winter!

It is possible to extend the breather on the transfer but like the others have said, there is very little room.
Find a 90 deg close elbow to thread in the hole first before you install a nipple for the hose and it should fit, mine did. I ran my breathers up to the top of the fire wall.

We're all looking at the symptoms ... pressure !

Let's look at the cause ? What the heck is causing this much pressure in a transfer case ?

I know the return line allows oil to go back and forth from the tranny to the xfer, but when I remove the fill plug oil dosen't come pouring out.

It just seems like it would take a SH*TLOAD of pressure to get past the threads an crush washer. And like a few of you have said "what is causing that much pressure?".

I'm also afraid that if I get the fill plug to seal, what will relieve the pressure then?
