I am going to do the front crank seal and oil pump O ring this month, and I'm getting my parts and tools lined up.

Do I need a seal puller? If so, what specific seal puller would you recommend?

If no seal puller is needed, what technique would you suggest for getting it out safely (as in not damaging the front of the crankshaft)?

Thanks
Russell

Probably be easier with a seal puller. I was planning on being careful with a flat head screwdriver and pliers wrapped in some tape or something.

Getting the seal back in I saw a guy use a 2" PVC open coupler to seat it correctly.

Fingers is all the tool you really need. A screw driver wrapped in electrical tape and a small mallet to punch it through the seal will do the trick if you are not able to pull out by hand

Did mine a month ago. Seal came out real easily with the careful use of a screw driver. I tired a puller but it kept slipping off of the inside sealing ring of the seal itself. Probably could have used a different puller but like I said, came out real easily with the screwdriver. Once a I got it lifted up a bit i could grab it with a pliers. Also had a fancy set of seal installers and none fit as well as the 2" PVC coupling. I'd suggest using that.

This is by far the best video around anywhere for your job.
Watch all of it, saved me with the tips.

Texasknowhow did the video, and I agree with your comments...

As mentioned above, use a long shaft blade style screwdriver, blade wrapped in tape, come in from above and aim for the inside of the lower lip of the seal (6 O'clock position) and lever it out, easy peazy.

I used a screwdriver with electrical tape to prevent gouging.

As mentioned, use a 2" PVC coupling to drive the new one in. And don't get all sensitive about pushing it in, you need to properly seat it!

Also, be SURE to fold several layers of cardboard in between the radiator and engine when doing all this.

Some moron I know managed to knock a hole in his radiator when doing his, and had to buy another radiator.

Thanks for the tips, Mudders. Yes, that video on YouTube by Texasknowhow is awesome.

This is exactly what I am doing this weekend. The original radiator started leaking so need to replace it. I have had a decent oil leak for years and am going to replace the oil pump cover o-ring, distributor o-ring and crank shaft seal. I am hoping this fixes the leak and I do not have to do the upper oil pan down the road. Already did the valve cover and that fixes a small amount. Not many other things it could be at this point.

Does the crank shaft seal bottom out or do you want the outer edge flush with the engine?

Mine was really tough to get out. I left the radiator in so the screw driver technique was not working so well. I bought the seal puller for about $12, it worked great. I have since used it on my axles. IMO great investment. Also helps you to not scar up anything
