Check that the power wire plugged into the ignitor has 12V (batt. power) when the key is on. It probably does not.
Cut back into the hacked & taped harness until the B/Y wire for ignition power is located. Test to be sure it has 12V batt power when the key is in run or crank position.
 
You need to find the large black/yellow stripe wire that originally connected to the ballast resistor. In the last picture, there seems to be one running along the right side of the battery. It looks a little too big, but perspective can be deceiving. It is about 12 ga. the little ones are 16.
