Okay, good idea Jim! Thanks! Should be able to get one today, will post results tonight!

New Dizzy!

Picked up a new dizzy from Rocky Mountains Cruisers here in Denver, looks good and clean and the vac advance works! Should be putting it in soon!

Which vacuum advance port are you going to use?

I have a couple dizzys around where the main VA diaphram is toast, but the secondary one is ok.

They both seem to work?? The primary moves it a lot and the secondary only a little, so I'm gonna hook it up per the emissions FSM.

Looks good Adam. Interested to see if you notice a difference.

Anyone have any tips to pulling this old dizzy? I've unscrewed the retaining bolt but this thing won't budge!

First, try to get it to rotate. If it will spin a little ways both directions, but still won't come out, it's just the o-ring on the shaft that has bonded to the inside of the bore. At that point you know it's gonna come out once the o-ring is broken loose, so go ahead & stack a 2x4 scrap under it and pry up against the main body.

Actually, your old dissy is pretty much garbage, so you can medieval with it from square one. Just don't damage nearby things, like oil cooler or side cover.

So, got the old dizzy out, new dizzy in, hooked up the wires and it cranked right up! I let it run for a bit, realized my timing light didn't work and turned off the truck, messed with a few things and went to crank it again and now it won't turn over... I kind of think my battery is getting weak, but even connected to the 4Runner it still won't crank.. should I be checking something??

Give tour starter a couple of raps with a hammer.

The starter is turning the flywheel, it just won't crank...

I mean, if I were a tooth off, it wouldn't have started so easily, right? And then for it to not want to crank again even with jumper cables is driving me a little crazy... I pulled the plug and it sparks, so I'm not sure where to go from here, I'm gonna get a new battery and timing light and check it out tomorrow. I was going to adjust it using the FSM method, but I can't fine the line or BB in my window, it is hard to see it at a good angle...

The timing might be a little too far advanced, causing it to be hard to start. I forget which way to turn the dizzy to retard it a bit and see if that helps.

Look at the rotor while cranking the engine, and see which way it turns, moving your dizzy in the same direction will retard the spark, opposite will advance your spark.

Ok guys, resolution! I got the old one out with a gentle application of a claw hammer! Seriously though, it was easy to remove after sitting for a day or so. Put the new one in and replaced the plugs and she fired right up! (The old plugs looked okay to me, photo attached) After messing with the dizzy I turned the truck off and it wouldn't start again, replaced the battery with an Optima yellow top and she fired back up (full disclosure I accidentally hooked them up backwards and fried my fusible link) I repair the link and adjusted the timing to the BB being right at the bottom of the window! Well, after all that now my head unit doesn't work! 2 steps forward and one back it would seem, I'll figure out what the problem is tomorrow and report back. Thanks for all your help!

Replaced the fuse in the back of the head unit, and it still won't turn on, looks like its gone.

Just to end this thread. I replaced my stereo and everything worked fine. I also highly suggest painting the BB and TDC line on flywheel. Makes life mucho easiero.
