Have a buddy that has a 1999 lx470 and his front dif back lash is huge and making a masive clunk, Hes kinda down on his luck financially and can afford to fix right now. could i disconnect the front shaft and have him drive with the center diff locked untill he gets some funds together?

Has he tried greasing the slip shaft and u joints? It can seem like magic how well it reduces or eliminates drive lash clunk.

Yeah I did that for him. I'm pretty sure it's the back lash not the joints. I was under it when he put it in drive from reverse and back and forth and the pinion is spinning about 1" with no movement from the cv's
In answer to your question, yes, he can drive like that.
