The 3G ipad has a full GPS receiver in it. What's more the iPad 2 and iPhone 4+ also have accelerometers that aid in movement calculations that most GPS hand held's dont have.

Most of good iOS apps require you to download map regions for out of cell coverage use, such as Motion X. One of the maps mentioned in my previous post, ScenicMap, doesn't even require you to download maps... it loads them at app install.

Ok, I had a 3 gs... until Sunday when my wife washed it. I now have a 4s, I'll look at the ipads. Do all Ipad 2's have gps, or still only the 3g versions?

This is something ive been dabbling in for years, but only recently have I been able to really get setup for it. What Im planning on using is my Android smartphone (evo 4G, and maybe later an android tablet with GPS) along with BackCountry Navigator. This app has the ability to load Mobile Atlases onto the SD Card, and i wont require any data connection, just a good GPS connection.

I have been using Mobile Atlas Creator (Mobile Atlas Creator (MOBAC)) to copy sections of California i am partly familiar with, and load them onto my phone. Backcountry navigatorp has a feature to track your position and even leave a track, so you can mark trails and keep them saved on your device for next time. Now the next step I need to take is to actually get out on some of these trails and see how well the GPS is in the middle of nowhere.
