I have a rear axle out of a 2004 4Runner. It has and elocker but I'm not sure what gears are in it? Is there anyway to find out without pulling the diff? Any info would be great.

Asuming the diff is unlocked; hold one of the axle ends so it will not turn, rotate the other end 2 full revolutions while counding the number of times the pinion turns. This may be a 2 man job, and it's helpfull if you mark where you start on the pinion/diff and axle/brake drum/backing plate.

* If the diff is locked, you only need to turn the axle shaft one full revolution.

Good luck!

And welcome to Mud!!!!!! :flipoff2:

Mmmmmmm they didn't come in 94 either.... Hehehe Unless it's a 94 axle that had an E locker swapped in....

I think there were from 96-2000/2002? and then stopped, and reintroduced in 07 or 08?????? That's a lot of quesion marks though...

First I would measure the width of the axle WMS to WMS to see if it is a modified axle or stock tacoma axle.

Mini axles: 8" pre 1986 (10 bolt ring gear/ 30 spline)
55" WMS

IFS Rear Axles: 8" 1996-1995 ( 10 Bolt ring gear/30 spline)
58" WMS

95.5-04 Tacoma: TRD 8" (10 Bolt ring gear/30 spline) Non TRD 8" (12 bolt ring gear/30 spline)
60" WMS

If it is not under a Truck I would pull it apart, check breaks, check condition and gearing of R&P gears, install new axle seals, and put it together with new gear oil. Then you KNOW for sure what is in it and what kind of shape it is in. Seels, oil, and breaks are cheap.

If it came from a modified truck gears may be changed but likley they are 4.10 gears.

Spining the tires and watching the drive shaft will tell you like mentioned above. Just watch close because there are a lot of options for the 8" rear end. 3.70, 4.10, 4.30, 4.56, 4.88, 5.29.

I would pull it, you would hate to make a mistake and have 4.10 in front and 4.30 in rear and blow a t-case up because you were off in watching your roatations.

That is a sweet find. I had a shot to buy one last year and kick myself all the time for not getting it.

My 97 Runner had one and the newer body style had the auto LSD option (which my 09 has). Don't show a diff lock on the option for the 03-09.

If you have it out and are going to take it apart and check it out you can just count the teeth. That's the easiest way.

I'm probably thinking of the FJ Cruiser... They had optional lockers...

'09 had a diff lock with the 'trail edition' package. Very rare trucks. '10+ used the bigger 8.2" elocker diff.
