Hi everybody... I've been lurking for a while, but this is my first post.

Quick question: has anybody here done a diesel conversion on an FJZ-80 using an older Toyota Diesel set-up, like maybe a 2H and a matched auto tranny?

I'd like to swap-in a diesel into a 1995 Landy but the cost of a 1HD-T drivetrain in Canada ($12,000+!!) just isn't feasable.

Hi welcome to the board. Nobody on here has swapped a 2h in. Can't say it hasn't been done, but I have not seen any threads about it.

Only threads I have seen in here about converting 80's is for the 1hd-t and I have also seen a cummins one in the hardcore area.

Also guys have stuffed SBC into their 80's so no reason a 6.2 chev diesel wouldn't fit.

If the budget is low, also consider a 1HZ engine, the non turbo version. Also in many 80's overseas. You can turbo it later when funds are avail.

landy is generally a term used for Land Rovers............ But call your truck what you want :)

I wouldnt do the 2H swap into the 80. The body is just too heavy and after driving it with a 1FZ youll be really missing the HP.
As BB say the minimum would be 1HZ if you use a toyota diesel
The chev diesel swap into an 80 series is popular in oz(see below)
It can look real neat if done right. Plenty of kit choice available
robs pics 135 (Small).webp

That looks good. funny how in OZ with all the Toyota choice people run GM stuff. Here 6.2s are super common and sitting around at junkyards all over. Nobody really wants them here.

I fellow co-worker has one he can get for 800 canadian rebuilt. crazy eh? dirt cheap.

If you can manage a 1HZ for your truck that is what I would go for. Lots of support thru the industrial toyota dealer(ENS).

BB I think they mainly use the 6.5 here. The company that did the above swap tear every engine down and rebuild it and offer a warranty.
There is still a lot of mixed opinion about this swap, one of them being the noise at highway speed and whether the gearbox/clutch can handle it.
I personally wouldnt have one but if I lived in North America and was yearning for a diesel then things may change.
Oh by the way some fools are paying $23000 for this swap here:D
Some of them got insulted on a local 4x4 chat when I told them how cheap these motors are your way.
The company that done this swap often have toyota diesels for sale that they take as a trade but Im not sure of the condition

Thanks for the info, everyone, and the "howdy".

I don't specifically want a TURBO doesel... I've done some looking around, and the 1HD-T and 1HZ options are simply too much money for my budget. I'd gladly put a 1HZ under the hood if I could afford the $8000 (!) which seems to be what the bottom line would be for the plant, harness, etc. Basically the cheapest option is to find a Diesel 80 front-cut from Japan or Australia, and that's big bucks.

But if anyone knows a cheaper way... I'm all ears!

There is no cheap way. It all costs big. Its what you want. The price you pay for the diesel conversion might take 10 or more years to pay itself off. In savings. Or if diesel becomes more expensive than the gas it might never.'

Having an oil burning does allow you to burn more than what the gas company sells you tho. As just about any oils will burn in them.

Rosco, the 6.5 is more expensive here. The 6.2 is the cheap one. The 6.5 might run into the 4k canadian price to get at a junk yard. SO not even a new one.

I asked about buying a 7.3 powerstroke to convert a truck I had and the junkyard was telling me min 5k for all the bits with the engine. For one with low kms if avail.

Buys alot of gas.

IronYuppy, just sell the 80 and buy a HJ60 from canada. Then you have a diesel for cheap. :)

Thats what I thought so how do they charge $18-19k for labour? Its not much different to a chev gasser conversion and most of the vehicles they do are diesel to start with.

You know what they say about a fool and his money:D

Well, putting a diesel into an 80 would be labour intensive. As there is lots of electrical mapping to get it all in and functional. Cruise/AC tach, etc etc.

But 18k is a lot of profit.

Hey, I'm already in Canada!

Diesel 60s are a dime a dozen here. Plus then I'd have to give up my snazzy power moon-roof, e-lockers, and cupholder!

hey iron.. you should post pics of your 80.... im looking at trying to find an 80 in calgary... then in a few years put in a diesel.

where in canada are ya

cheers, colin

IronYuppy:

Welcome.

No one here has posted about a 2H into an FZJ80, but I know of at least one that's kicking around in the Lower Mainland with that swap.

The thing that I would ask myself is...why go through all that trouble to swap in a 2H? Like the others have said, a more worthwhile swap would be a 12H-T, 1HZ, or 1HD-T, IMO.

Doh! Put your location in your settings. If you don't want to say where you are say north of 49..... whatever.

If your in Canada just get a half cut 1HZ 80 from japan and do the conversion with all the bits and pieces.

Save your money and use the right engine. IMOP anyhow.

Listen to BB..If you are going to swap an 80 save your money and start with the right engine or don't do it at all. Putting the wrong engine is going to take as much or probably even more due to the additional custom mounts required and different systems and full time vs part time 4wd etc. After all the work you may be very disapointed with the results. There was an FJ80 around Vancouver that had a 2H and 5 speed swapped in.. but only for a very short time, I'll let you draw your own conclusions. The guy couldn't get it out of there soon enough, he swapped a 12H-T in and things were a whole lot better.
