I'm glad i ran into this thread. I am in the middle of trying to figure this out myself. You seem to be doing a better job than I. Jim C. did both my carb and dissy for a desmog. Your photos are a big help, please keep them coming. I have the same engine...81 fj-40 2F. Between both of us maybe we can compile some comprehensive photos of what needs to be done for our year engine.
I apologize, I have been out of town for a week and a half and hadn't had a chance to check this thread until now...
As I mentioned in my latest posts, the engine is running better now. I have less hesitation in third and fourth gears. Seems to idle well, no hiccups, no backfiring, etc. However, I am unable to push her past 55-58'ish to really feel/listen to the engine at higher speeds. I have been noticing a strange vibration/noise at highway speeds and am afraid to push it very long at all. The engine seems to have more power to give, which is exciting. Drives great around town, but I am still wondering if I have it 'correctly' desmogged. I may still be able to fine tune things even more. No new pics as of yet.
jake604: By the way, what works for my scenario may not be exactly what you will need to do for your rig. I may have a different setup due to my '77's smog parts, bionic '77/'83 carb, etc. If you have any other questions, by all means please ask. Someone will hopefully take pity on our ineptitude and eventually enlighten us both- I hope.
