Hey guys just bout a 88 yota DD/Crawler..here is my problem... I have death wobbles bad. the truck has a newer Trail gear SAS, I have just replaced/rebuilt the knuckles with bearings ect. it has a trail gear high steer....any ideas were to look... do I need to have the knuckels tuned? thanks

Is it a wobble as in the steering wheel moves back and forth in your hand or is it a wander as in there seems to be no directional stability in the steering. I agree 100% with KLF about the alignment if it has severe wander. Either toe-in is WAY off or you're way negative on your caster.

big bad tires are a pita to balance.

imbalanced tires can cause this.

bent wheels can cause this.

there is a liquid you can put in the tires to compensate. ask a agriculture dealer like Deere or a truck stop

bent axles can cause this.
have a buddy drive along side of you to see if there is a obvious problem.

or you can jack stand both axles and drive the wheels in both 2 and 4wd.
that may help narrow it down

Normally having caster up to 10° won't cause death wobble. Something is really loose, or the tires are junk. I went through everything on my truck, then swapped the 35" sx's for 35" MTR's and the death wobble went away, and never came back

I was having bad death wobble with my 4runner and I had it aligned at a local repair shop, got a little better but not great. So I took it to my friend who runs a local 4x4 shop (should have just done this in the first place) and he went over it and said they f-ed up my toe in. he fixed it and death wobble no more. i would have an offroad shop do the alignment they will know what to do as oposed to a regular shop. After a proper alignment, if it persists I would consider axle shims. Cutting and turning the knuckles is a lot of work. i would exhaust all other options before doing that.

check your shackle bushings if they are worn it will cause this & the u-bolts.
Good luck I ve been there

He cannot shim the axle with a trail gear SAS. The tie rod and drag link will hit the springs due to the design of the high-steer. It would have to have the knuckles cut and turned.

ok so appears i am in a negcaster..real bad pin angle...can i shim? or do I need to cut and turn the knuckles?

Is the pinion pointed up too much or down too much ?

anything over 6-8 degrees of caster can cause it. i'd also look into bead balancing your tires. you can go to walmart and get the airsoft beads to put in them.

DID YOU REPLACE THE WHEEL BEARINGS? IF YOU DIDN'T get the bearing race pressed down correctly into the hub it can cause a bad steering wheel wobble. i would start be jacking the front end up and watch the wheels for a wobble as you spin the tires.
