Folks I was looking for trouble yesterday. I cleaned out the garage. And then tore into the patrol. I had it out on the trail behind the house. The eldest son and I had it out for about an hour .

This is not scaring me that much, yes it more than the PO said, but I was aware of it going in. I thought about doing a recessed set of lights but I may just go with round trailer lights. This rust has made up my mind to keep the custom tire carrier. It hides a lot.... I'll just fix the center section and paint it. the same color as the wheels .. machine grey.

This is how I plan to "fix" it. 16ga metal. then I'll move on to the seat belt anchor area. More 16 ga and some plate and finally the two spots above the vent in and out.

I know many folks cringe at the idea of not welding these panels in place but, I plan to drive this thing. And I'm a strong believer in fusor or dura- bond by 3m. I cut 99 % of the rust out on the drivers side pic, next is the pass side, I just don't want to pull a darwin. I slathered on some rust neutralizer, that's really only on the surface and is pretty solid. I will rust bullet the back side and then spray undercoating.

The more I dig the more I realize this "new" rig has just a little less rust than my plow truck. The selling point was it has less than 10K on the entire drivetrain..... although the plow truck only has 48K orig miles. I had it out on the trails behind the house on Sat, before I started digging. It does well reminds me of the 71 lc I has except the ride is a lot less bouncy in this patrol.

why are you not welding in new metal? I am no expert but cutting that rot out and welding in the new... then seal the back with rust bullet and paint the front.. not deal with it again.

Covering it up will just hide what is going on behind the panel, no? Personally, I would rather know what is going on but... just my two cents Bob.

Your panel looks great, that is why I was wondering.... welding the sheetmetal (again, no expert here) but go really slow and 'stitch' weld... that is what the experts tell me. I worked on sheetmetal on my half doors and when I got impatient, I burned through but otherwise, it is not so bad... rust bullet the back and paint the front... should be good! I really like that patrol, sorry it is more krusty than you thought...

You are facing a corrisional challenge, so long as you have bondo, sheet metal, sanding supplies and cash, everything will turn out OK!

Neither for now they're just put on there for pictures. I have a few more areas I want to make before I start welding or bonding.

PS I did cut a lot more out. mostly along the bottom edge . it was rusty between the spot welds.

I traded the 40 for a 69 chevelle about 5-6 months ago. I loved the velle , but was missing the 40 so I had the plow truck there with lots of spare parts and decided to get another patrol. I enjoy the challenge. Oddly enough I'm doing to the patrol what I did not want to do to the 40?? The new owner is on the board somewhere. He's from Conn.

this is still around I offered $1500 but he passed. it was inspected till Jan. It was posted on the main board search "scranton"

1978 Toyota Landcruiser FJ40

It's got some issues but, also some spare parts and it's a driver.

After a I built an arbor for wifey-poo. I had an hour or so and dug into the seat belt area. Honestly if it weren't for the cab floors being shot I'd say the plow truck is on equal terms as par as rust on the tub...

Oh check out the turn signals I couldn't take take the VW ones any longer. If I get time later today I plan to put it back to gether.

I looked at that as well. I offered $2000 and he wasn't into that either. I have some pictures up on my website from when I looked at it.

1978 LandCruiser

For whatever reason it has drums up front and a 3 speed tranny. I believe he pulled it out of Altoona or close to there. My concern was that if I purchased it, I wouldn't put any time into the 74 although I'd love to have a 40 daily driver.

Sorry for the hijack

Very cool truck.

Did you ever take a close look at that truck in Scranton?

no, but he has a few more pics and I emailed him once or twice. I searched scranton and sent him an email that he posted. It was inspected till Jan I do not know more than that. He said he daily drove it to work at the army depot.

Also Alan in Wilkes-Barre ( psuknow98 ) has quite a few parts for sale he's only about 20 mins from scranton. I've gotten stuff from him in the past he's a decent guy. I picked up a low miles 4spd tranny, trans , and the driveshafts plus a few other bits for $300..

I drove that one in Scranton. Look back up to my post and you'll see pictures I took. It was OK however needs a ton of work. You could drive it as is but really needs a serious date with maintenance. I think his inspection is good at this point because he still has it on the road. $1500 would be a good price for it, $2000 would still be worth it. I just couldn't see spending the $2500 or even $2200 for that matter.

Oh yeah, he said he has a spare 3 speed and tc that come with it for what thats worth.

Does the guy in WB have a listing on the site or do you just contact him as you need stuff?

BTW, I love the patrol. I had never heard about them until this post and did some research. There is a nice one on Ebay in AZ. If you ever want to get rid of one or know of another somewhat local, give me a yell.

Don't mean to hijack the thread Bob, but I have a couple of quick questions about that 40.

Can you give me an idea of the kind of maintenance that rig needs? How bad is the rust issue? Did you drive it?
