Hi all,

Thought I’d post a thread on my 79 fj40 build, the end result will hopefully be s somewhat family friendly trailer queen.

Fist up was collecting a rusty old 79 Fj40 with a hydrolocked b engine and 4 speed gearbox.
I fully stripped it keeping anything that was salvageable. The tub and bonnet were scrapped and other parts that were of no use we’re sold.

My next issue was finding a fairly sound tub that wasn’t gold and plated. I found this one for two box’s of beer

New 40” sticky maxxis trepadors arrived and custom beadlocks made

Cut body mounts off a late chassis that was missing its crossmembers, welded them on the 79 chassis and got the rig up on stands.

Tonight’s mission was parting the a343 auto and transfer then stripping the transfer case to install my pto drive gear.

I’ve been a bit slack getting this done but the pto gear is in and the a343 trans is mated to the 1kz. Hopefully it will be part of the 40 by the end of the week

Update,
Motor and box are in and I finished up the engine mounts tonight.

The belly clearance is looking great too!

Tomorrow’s mission is a custom gearbox crossmember

I didn’t quite get the gearbox crossmember finished but it’s 3/4 done

Looks strong but heavy. Weight is not your friend
Good choice on the bushings for motor and transmission mounts, they work really well. What did you cut them off of?

Strength is my friend haha I’m happy to sacrifice weight when it comes to important mounts etc. Theyre y60 Nissan patrol rear link ends, I’ll be using them for all suspension links aswell just to keep it the same and simple

Today I got the 80 series rear housing stripped, all mounts cut off and ground back to shiny stuff Now it’s time to shave the bottom of the diff and build an axle truss

Stripping the 80 axle is never a fun job.

Second attempt at trussing an axle without warping it The other housing is now in my scrap heap

Slide a long piece of tube under the jack stands, then chain the axle to it at each end, While putting a bottle jack in the center. It will preload it and help keep it from warping

Second axle truss was a success. It’s now under the 40 and the lower links are done. Top links will hopefully be done this week
