I have an opportunity to purchase a used diesel motor and 5 speed trans combo out of a mid '80's to mid '90's Daihatsu Delta. It looks like a B motor, (care to guess which one?) but I'm no pro in identifying these beasts.

The motor is a builder, possibly junk: any motor being replaced here usually is in more than terminal condition. The seller is asking $600, complete with starter, alternator, injection pump, bell housing, clutch and trans.

I have no need for the motor, but thought it would be fun to rebuild it, fabricate a running stand and play with it while looking out for a "host" vehicle needing a donor.

Is there a cross reference between the Daihatsu motor designations and the Toyota family designations? I figure that will be the easiest identification method, else I can measure bore and stroke or learn the motor size from the vehicle from which it was extracted.

I did a search, but did not find anything useful.

Cheers,

Rick

No Idea really but if the block is Blue and its indirect injection with a rotary pump its probably a 3BII
If its direct injection with a blue block and rotary pump it may be a 14B

Mid 80 to mid 90 is a wide range. I think it could even be an 11B if its early in your range

What about a block with black paint? It has an inline pump squirting fuel indirectly. The valve cover is squarish. Sorry, my flaming ignorance is showing.

Rick

block color may be hard to go by on an old engine. Might have to post a pic if you can. On the toys the squarish covers were on DI engines early and later DI and IDI engines.

I thought the Diahatsu had the blocked stamped like a Toyota.

This might help with model ID
DAIHATSU TRUCK PARTS WA

It would mke a good stand by generator;)

Thanks Rosco, that link was of use to me.

Gents, I have an engine identification. The motor is a Daihatsu "DL", fitted in 1983 to 1993 V58 Delta 2.5t trucks. It is a 2765cc 4 banger, with gear driven overhead valves, gear driven inline IP and indirect injection. The rating on the vehicle registration pegs the output at 56kw.

I am unable to find where this motor crosses over to a Toyota motor designation. There are no "D" Toyota motors that I can locate, and it in not a timing belt motor like the "L" series.

The local mechanic says its a Toyota design, but I'll be darned if I can find corroborative data. if anyone has more places to look, please pass them on.

Cheers,

Rick

There is a D series diesel but they are big Toyota truck engines from the 70s and are 5-6 litres.
The DL type might be a Hino engine.

Diahatsu are an engine manufacturer in their own right ,but they specialises in large diesels for ships and powers stations, but they also make small diesels.

6 posts and no pics :sheesh: ;)

OK. Apparently there was a bug with the new hardware/software on MUD that prevented me from loading a pic before.

Cheers mate, that looks like it alright. The IP is gear driven off the cam gear on the other side of the manifolds. It is a fairly compact motor, maybe dense is a good description.

Is that the same engine that was turbocharged in the daihatsu rocky?

I believe it is, based on the information that it is the same motor designation (DL) and displacement.

I am 90% sure it's not a Toyota motor design at this point. However, being that this motor is fitted where the 13b and 14b were also utilized, I want to investigate how the bell housing mates up to Toyota stuff. It may be possible to adapt this motor using parts on hand.

I'll have another look at it this week.

Im sure others will appreciate another possible engine swap instead of being forced to choose between the 2LT or the 1KZ;)

Sorry there mate, my laptop had a suffered a coronary thrombosis, leaving me with no way to read the memory card in my camera. I know pictures make the convo, and promise to provide visual stimulation when I have the ways and means.

Hello,

I used to drive these Daihatsus a few years ago. Most were fitted with a 13B engine. Older ones were fitted with D/DL engines like the one in the picture.

Yes, it was a dense engine. If I remember correctly, the cab did not tilt and access was through two panels below the seats, which were folded upward and held in place with straps. A pain to repair. It was tough, however. Everything but the engine broke.

Both D/DL and 13B-powered models had good fuel economy. A full tank seemed to last forever. Steering, on the other hand, was terrible.

i have one of these

hi there all,

i now litte about engines. but I have a daihatsu delta 1995 v57R and it has a DL engine. I love the little truck for a bunch of reasons but i overheated it a while back. the water pump died while i was driving on the freeway and it over heated quite badly.

ever since it has been hard to start, takes 3 or 4 goes. I had the glow plugs checked and they are all working okay.

so my next move is to get a compression test done but im not sure its worth doing cause if it needs a re build or something im not ssure its worth spending that sort of money on this old truck.

My question is this. If these trucks with the DL engine 2765cc are in good condition what sort of speeds are they ment to be able to do on the freeway? mine only does 90 to 100km/h, 110km/h is its absolute maximum if you have a bit of a hill to help you along. However i spoke to a guy who wreckoned he had owned 3 of these trucks and they all did 120km/h on the free way fully loaded? can anyone confirm that this is true? Is there something really wrong with the engine if its not doing these sorta of speeds? can anyone recomend a course of action for teh predicament im in? I would consider doing some work on it myself (I'm an electronic engineer and mechanically minded) but I don't know a heap about car / truck mechanics... i have only done the od bit of work on them like chaneg a radiator or timing belt...

also if i was going to put a new engine in it, is there any way to work out what engines will fit if im looking for a reco one, or shoulkd i just get another DL for it? our there bretter engines that will fit it?

Yours maybe a little slow but I find it hard to believe that a 2.8 litre engine with 56kw is going to do 120kph fully loaded.
A comp test will tell you where you stand

Unfortunately we dont get many Diahatsu truck owners with engine like this on MUD ,so the knowledge base is a bit limited.
Second hand engines have their pitfalls and reco engines are not cheap if you want it done right.
What country are you in?

I i am from Belgium.
We have the DL engine in the cars here.
The are very relaible engines, the axles broke before the engine.
I have one for sale now, complete car.
With PTO.
Power TAke Off.
You can put a hydraulic pump on the gearbox. The ptobox is already on the gearbox, reday with chaft output.
The engine is a DL turbo intercooler.
