Hi mudders..... as a way of showing appreciation to all the awesome help i have received here on mud, i would like to develop free..yes you read it right..FREE..custom maps for your GPS devices. I can customize maps using ArcInfo and i will deliver the maps in the format most appropriate for a variety of GPS devices (i personally use Garmin)....and by deliver i mean post a link to download the file...im like a million miles away :D....

Anyways....so i dont have to keep repeating maps, i suggest that a member post a reply with a specific region and device to install on....the more the reply gets likes...the higher the priority.

we can start of with lets say regions of 50x50 miles and develop further as time passes. just send the area name and, if possible, top right and bottom left coordinates.

i hope i can give back as much as i have received from this great forum.

Sounds great, but what are you using as the base map? Or do we provide a base map and then tracklogs that can be 'merged' into the base map?

More info please...

cheers,
george.

if you have a base map it would help, but i have subscriptions to ESRI, Garmin and a few other sources to download from. Of course adding track logs would be an added extra for fellow mudders going off roading on 'undiscovered' routes....but if we do something like this, it would be great...who knows maybe an ih8mud app in the future.

Ok, I would guess most folk would be after topo maps with the most recent tracks marked on them. My own experience in oz is that our standard 1:250k topo maps are really old and many new tracks (especially due to mining activities) are missing. Additionally it appears that the oz mapping authority (government of course) seems to love REMOVING old tracks from maps. Most of the time that I plan a trip out bush now involves spending quite a bit of time with google earth to locate tracks that aren't on the topo maps, then creating a kml tracklog and then exporting it/importing it to run on oziexplorer so I can 'see' where the new tracks are while navigating.

So, for example, here's a piece of map cut from an oz topo map, what kind of detail do you have from your various map sources for this area (lat long marked on the map piece)?

OMG.....i started getting addicted to custom maps because of Ozi Explorer.....at the time we had to use gpsmapper to upload to garmin and other gps devices......and for New Zealand....i did a whole application for the Maori tribe back in 2010.....3d of mount Pirongia etc

I have 5m DTED and DEM for topo...adding the LandSat images would provide more details (ground cover etc)...and roads from Openstreets...i do have a paid subscription to some high res imagery, but unfortunately only for our region (North East Africa)...but i can trace over the premium maps to get more details of your area....i also have a massive POI database with MILLIONS of entries world wide.

im also tinkering with developing an android app currently for my own adventures here with the kids....

lets start

another thing....using arcInfo's spatial and 3d analyst toolkits, i can configure it to find routes with specific criteria using model builder...e.g. slope <30%, width >5m etc....everything is possible, it all depends on how high a res i can find for that area..

internet at home is a bit slow, so i will check what i can find tomorrow at work and then 'cook' something up quick as a sample

sounds good?
