Hey guys,

I'm toying with the idea of getting my first FJ55.
No rush, I'm gunna take my time :)

I found one near me but I think the price is about 1k too much.

Anyways, out of curiosity and personal aesthetics, has anyone seen custom front turn signals?
For example as anyone used the front turn signals from a BJ73.
Sorry, I hope I don't anger anyone haha
Here's a photo I found through googling ---> https://forum.ih8mud.com/attachments/turn-signals-jpg.760008/

Thanks for sharing your opinions/knowledge!

Cheers,
KevinH.

Welcome to the group! We have this discussion from time to time with some good examples of the 70 series. Some others are the G wagon and my favorite, the early style VW turn signal. I believe you have to heat up the plastic of the 70 series light in order to bend the housing to fit.

The 7X lights don't line up right with the profile of the front grille, but, as Ron stated, can be heated and formed to 'fit'.

Readily available G lights are single filament, and not an elegant way to convert. There are euro spec out there, that are dual, but command a steep price for a vintage part.

The VW lights work and, if none knew that originated from a beetle, look like they belong.

I feel those make so much more sense than stock. I knocked off two stock lights on my old 40 before going to the VW light. I hope not to repeat my past habits, but if it happens I wouldn't think twice with going back to them on the 55.

Hey,

Thank you Scrapdaddy, Delancy, and Bobm, for your inputs!

So Delancy, do you need to fabricate anything to make the old style vw turn signals to fit?
(I'm guessing the photo you posted does indeed have the vw turn signals).

Thanks again for your help and time guys.

Cheers,
Kevin

Yes, they're Superbeetle lights, purchased upon Ron's suggestion some years back.

I digress..... ;)

There are certain traits inherent various brands of earlier automobiles that COULD be correlated to components of the culture, which ethnicity bears some upon.

Ie, the Ferrari.

When Enzo drew up the first conceptual, you think he was thinking about aerodynamics?

No.....he was casting parting glances at the open Playboy with an ample, curvaceous Italian woman. (If you think I'm on crack, look at a top view of the early Ferraris and tell me what you see.....granted I am LARGLEY Italian...)

In the case of German vehicles, there appears to be a fascination with length, like it's supplemental. Where unnecessary, there'll be studs that are insanely long, that the length serves no purpose, these lights a prime example.

So, to answer the question, Kevin, no fabrication is required, the exception the necessity to remove the long, phallic like stud that protrudes some 8" from the light housing, best I can tell a tire tickler, considering the close proximity to the inner fender it must be on the VW.

Relatively straightforward, cut unnecessary threaded rod off, then bolt on.

(Disclaimer to the crybabies:

It's humor, nothing more, and probably a stretch at that. I am not racist, all contrived, not insinuating anything. Lacking experience with ANY, save my own, have no basis to state anything of the above as fact.......

except the LARGELY :flipoff2:)

The PO moved the stock turn signals to just above the front bumper. Guess the top of the fenders were toofar gone. There are rubber floor mats on top of the fenders. Works for now, but will get changed to stock spot at some point. The'73 was a quick fix for me to drive. Working on a '78 frame off with a first gen Dodge cummins transplant.

Hey 61twpw, What are you talking about. I'm confused

EDIT... Now I got it, you jumped threads on me. Post up some pictures, always good to see some wagons from Mo.

Here is my turn signal reposition. They work for now.

Was working on an fj40 I took in trade for my 1961 Dodge power wagon. Tried turning a trail rig into more of a daily driver. Found the '73 fj55 about 8 miles from where I used to live in Colorado. This is my new toy, like it so much more than the 40 trail rig.

Delancy, those look great. In a different post several indicated you have a set of amby doors for a 55. Do you still have them, for sale?

Don't want to hijack this thread, but guess I already did. What are you wanting for them? PM if you like
