Main bearings, front to rear. Thought I could save it by replacing these shells (?), as they seem like a sacrificial part. That's until..

..I saw that the crank had been 'adversely affected beyond a roadside repair'. If you're from around here you'd say it was 'faaaaaarked' our 'fkn cactus mate' or any of the other Australian colloquialisms we have :D

At the main bearings it's fine and despite the slightest scoring is be happy to reassemble and run them, but the rod big ends on cylinders 1-3 are toast and so is the crank at these points. You can see how toast back at post #340. The rocker shaft paste fused the shells in place and I had to give em a little tap just to get them out. In the process they fused inside the oil gallery (?) on cylinder three, as well as the oil galleries on the rod big ends on cylinders 1-3, as well as scoring the s*** out of the crank on cylinders 1-3. I guess the biggest sign for me was the welded up gallery on the crank. Even for a body guy, I know that's not good.

I know my next course of action for this engine will be to pull the crank (after unbolting the flywheel?) and taking it and the offending rods into a machine shop to be reground and have bigger shells (?) supplied. Then reinstallation. The only thing I dread is:

1. Pulling the flywheel.
2. The cost.
3. Reinstalling the slugs (can you do this from underneath? Aren't there rings n s*** that need to be compressed?)
4. The cost.
5. Turning it over for the first time.
6. The cost.

Did I mention the cost?

Oz me old I love the idea of a free engine, even if it is a flash bang 2F with all the modern gadgetry, but I must persevere with this one. It's a matching numbers truck and I'm actually enjoying being knee deep in engine parts! Never thought I'd be able to do this sh1t! So for the moment I'm going to say thanks old son, but not right this minute.

I know the feeling Cult. I just bought a 1964 F motor for Jade which was completely rebuilt including new pistons, rings, bearings, seals, crank ground and cam ground and rebuilt head. In the end I decided to rebuild the original motor from Jade to put back in to keep it period correct. The motor I bought cost me $1700.00.

You know @Ken White that bloke on facebook with the '64 could use a freshly built early F.

I actually dont have much of it left. I stripped the pistons and rings out to put into Jades motor and sent the head away with the motor as Jades original head had a crack in it. But if anyone is wanting a freshly bored block with ground cam and crank with new seals and bearings I would be willing to part with it for the right price.

You should try him. He might buy it if we guilt him into doing a resto ;)

Who was that again Cult. My age must be catching up with me.

The fella with the blue shorty with no lid and the newer engine? The one he reckoned was a Frankenstein?

Wait a minute, this doesn't make sense. If the rocker shafts were chewed up then why wasn't there mass up top when I pulled the cover? How did it get down below and into the galleries to **** everything? There was no oil up to wash it down. It only gets back down by dripping through the head. So the rocker assy wasn't the bigger issue here. It got worn by a lack of oil, sure, but not enough to do all that. The shafts aren't that badly damaged. Plus the big shavings I found on the journals would have been picked up by the screen on the pickup. So the damage had to have come from before the rod big ends. Now according to this diagram from coolerman, there is no dedicated rod big end part of the circuit. It drips down from the bores??

Cult
This damage was done long before you brought this truck as the sludge dictates this was not serviced at regular intervals. Sorry to see this sort of carnage mate the 2f engine is ready when you are. ;)

a general all round bummer cult.

personally i am happy to persevere with all manner of worn out crap but that pitted crank is bad news.

to carry on you really need to pull this motor. think a decent workshop manual, texta and ziplock bags. and money. hard to tell from the pics but this crank may well be unsalvageable. perhaps mr ken white has a good one still in that 64 block? love your dedication to the old f motor (thats my kind of talk) and i really hate to say it but perhaps ozcruisers motor may be a cheap quickfix to use your new rego in the here and now esp is you are cashstrapped for a decent rebuild. whatever you decide keep your original motor; as you say its a matching number tojo. (very rare in my parts; they have all had engine swaps at one point or other).

if there is a positive it is that these old motors are solid old survivors and fun to play with and learn a bit as you go. perhaps go the engine swap and rebuild the original as your funds permit? its a sensible option. but source a used crank, new bearings and rings and throw this back together gets my vote!

ozcruiser - noticed you trying to give this motor away before. whatever happens please dont scrap it!

Lads what about all the sh1te that is through the engine? Won't that have chewed up the block too, not just the components?

should be ok mate. most wearing parts have a bearing to act as the sacrificial piece. whether this block could do with a rebore is a seperate issue.

I have a freshly rebored "F" block with freshly ground crank and cam sitting here that I want to get rid of. Block was bored to first oversize.

I really need to think on this lads. I appreciate all your help and feedback and advice and offers of free and cheap donks, but I've got a house to buy and I need to think on the best course of action.

That's a no brainier to me cult take my engine and run it a few years until you get some equity in the house and then rebuild the original engine. Mate once I go back to work I will see if I can get it to brisvegas on a tilt tray.

Patience is a virtue ozcruiser!

cult: very nice work on that engine, it must be a bummer:mad: not being able to drive it since you just got it rego'd...
