I was in Dallas today and drove the route JFK did when he was assassinated. Could see people on the top story of the building, looking out the window where Lee Harvey Oswald took his shots from. On the street they have two X's to mark where the first and second shot occurred. Even saw the grassy knoll that everyone refers to. Have to admit it was a little surreal/creepy...

Had a similar experience at Ford's theatre. The hair on the back of my neck stood up as soon as I walked in the door.

Good reminder that this s*** can be dangerous. He rolled backwards before going over, another argument for AT.

I love all the comments, were they wearing seatbelts? I'm all for wearing seatbelts but if you roll backwards off a rocky 80 foot embankment in an open vehicle, your odds aren't good with or without.

I'm curious how it's "another argument for AT" I assume you mean an Automatic Trans? Why? How would having an auto have prevented this?

I remember back in the day when it wasnt considered manly to have an AT in your 4X4. Now they are life saving!

Believe he is referring to the three pedals and two feet. Sometimes manual transmission require using all three pedals at the same time. While trying to get going you could roll backwards as you move your right foot from the brake to the gas pedal.

I think one thing that has happened over the years is vehicles have gained HP and automatic transmissions have become less power robbing. If I wanted to use my FJ62 as a DD I would consider a H55F. The little bit I've driven it since switching from 235X75X15s to 31X10.50X15 I can notice a difference in power. Not as bad as when I was running 33X9.59X15s but still noticeable. In it's current roll I won't be switching to a manual transmission. While sad what happened can't really say for certain the transmission would have changed the out come. I did something like this back in 2001 on a elk hunt. Early morning I was driving to the spot I planned to hunt. In the dark I over shot where I wanted to be. While backing down a narrow forest service road I missed judged where I was and didn't see a turn and backed down embankment. Wasn't that long of a dropped off and was able to get off the rocks and back on the road with my winch. The area was relatively flat this was the only drop off on the road (my luck). In my case auto or manual wouldn't have made a difference. On the May run I did have one time my 4Runner didn't want to go over a rock on a steep hill and wheels starting spinning. With a automatic I was able to back up a little and keep the brakes applied while giving some gas. The brakes prevented the wheels with the least traction from spinning and made getting started much easier than a stick would have been. On the flip side a stick can add some challenge off road driving. It seems to be a vicious cycle. Mod your 4X4 then find a more challenging trail to keep it interesting.

According to the article, he rolled backwards while negotiating an obstacle and went off the side of the road. An AT would have kept him in place.

Not really enough information to say the transmission had anything to do with the accident. It's common when negotiating a obstacle to roll backwards to try a different approach. Could be while trying to do that the driver misjudged the drop off. Not saying that's what happened but with the little bit in the article it's hard to say for sure how it happened. I've driven more miles off road with a stick than I have with a auto. Worse thing that I've have happened was what I mentioned above. That was not the fault of manual transmission. While I blame myself the lights in the radio face reflecting on the back hatch window that was fogged up and weak reverse light in a 68 FJ40 didn't help.

More Cruiser Karma: met a Cruiserhead at the Frys parking lot as we both pulled in; me in the 40 and him in his remarkably well preserved 60. It has an H55, lift, etc

Cool guy that works for Fender guitars and frequents MUD but under the radar. We chatted for a while and looked over his white 60. I warned him about you Copper state folks...jk

He has inquired about sourcing a 1HZ or a 1HDT to convert . Anyone with ideas on that?
