I just like canoeing, hot, cold, what ever. I want a new boat. mine is too long, and too heavy.

Have to do a bunch of stream samples this year in the Black Warrior system hitting the Locust Fork, Mulberry, Sipsey, etc. Haven't selected stream sections yet and whatever I do this winter will be repeated this summer. There will be days when it will be great and others when it is downright work. Once covered almost all of the Paint Rock River system in Jackson County, Estill Fork, most of Hurricane Creek, and the mainstem. After about 3 days of canoeing it becomes work.
With all the gear I'll have to carry the canoe will be a large one, 17' Dagger Legend.
But it's a great way to see lots of river that most people never do. And in the winter, no crowds.
Coastal plain rivers are other great places - Pea, Choctawhatchee, Yellow, and Conecuh are favorites.

In scouts we did the whole Cahaba river. It took a couple of summers to do the whole thing, we did it in roughly 50 mile chunks at a time.
I liked being able to pack everything I wanted to take, but still have that feeling you get backpacking knowing you are far away from everything.
I have only done a small portion of Hurricane Creek.
I would like to get a 14ish foot modern lightweight boat.

I have some friends that have done a paddling camping trip down the Sipsey. Saw the pics, and immediately wanted to do it myself. It's gorgeous, and doesn't even look like the southeast in places. More ferns and leafy type growth instead of the normal mature hardwood and shrub growth you see in most spots.
Which Sipsey? I'll be doing the Sipsey Fork in the Bankhead NF between the rec area and hwy 33.

Float some, drag through shallow riffles, stick head under water to look for shelled critters, repeat, repeat, etc., etc. Get off stream at end of day, load canoe, gear, and wet stuff, go to Scottsboro to Mexican restaurant.

that looks like it would be a ton of fun to paddle.
there is a lot of flat water on the cahaba... probably good when you have 20+ 14 year olds who are just learning how to not tump over. but its not an exciting trip. It has some really fun parts... but there is a lot of time paddling. at least thats how I remember it now....
