Bryan, excellent points! I will say to a degree I gotta acknowledge that exists, but in my experience, not the two shops I suggested. I am the same way b/c recently when I asked for an engine/machine shop in the CA Central Valley to do the minimum deck and bore necessary they made it out like I was out of my mind and wasting their time. The "Oh, we're already setup to run .003 to .005 and 20 over just doesn't cut it in my world, mostly b/c I'm an ex 18R, 20R, 20/22 hybrid, and 22RTE owner who now's pushed both his and his friend's 3.0's out with no issues. Cripes, go that far on a 3.0 head and they're just beer cans waiting to me made. It's how things are built is what ultimately matters, more so w/ the 3.0's. That's why to this day if I'm helping someone out I absolutely insist on their block being kept (record serial # or stamp one in an innocuous place nobody would think of cleaning or worrying about), magnafluxed, and ultimately left in as short-block a form as possible. Even then I still pull things apart and bust out the plasti-gauge.

FWIW,
i went ahead and rebuilt my own because i did not like what i found out about anyone making reman engines.

From what I found they basically all do the same thing. they get a core engine in and regardless of what shape its in, they turn the crank down to the minimum allowable diameter, open the rods up to the maximum allowable diameter and put the biggest set of oversize bearings in there...

I am in need of a short block- I put on a new Engnbldr last year. But it seems that every shop has good and bad reviews. If we had some good builders in Texas, I may go that route. That said, I like the idea of rebuilding it yourself. I have never rebuilt one before, but am willing to undertake it. Where can I get some info on doing this? Does someone know of an instruction DVD?

There is a DVD for the 22RE that someone made a while ago that shows how to rebuild a 22re. Everything from tear down to rebuild. I have it at home, somewhere. I will also try and find the link for the video. It's not bad, but 22RE are really simple to rebuild.

Everyone I went with a Grooms engine- a full long block.
Actually purchased this on Friday of this last week.

Reason behind was:
-ease, they are based in Nashville Tn just north of me
-warranty, not only do they off a mileage 3 year/100K but also a lifetime warranty for extra 150.00- one time no haggle warranty
-time frame, went with a full long block for time down, my 4runner is my daily driver for my job, im lucky to have another vehicle to drive but with the 4runner down I can have the motor swapped & back on the road in about a week.
-also for my situation, i drive between 40K/60K a year so Ill put a crate motor to a real test

Fingers crossed:grinpimp:

Pic of motor!

I was going to get one from 22RE performance, but for some reason I couldn't get ahold of a live person or get phone messages returned. I've tried calling with credit card in hand and was going to say fxxx it and a get the stage 2.5 with a few goodies. They had me sold when one of their promo videos used Primus "DMV" for the background.

I don't have time for rebuilding myself, but I guess that is what I'll be doing anyways as long as I can salvage the block. I'm very weary of rebuilt engines from others; the last was an F155 from a builder in Yucaipa. I think the motor got 9-10k on it before it took the biggest dookie ever. Then there was a 2F that I wouldn't be surprised to find duct tape inside of. The 22REPerformance guys have had nothing but good feedback from mudders and pirates, oh well.

Of note, YodaMan has been a part of the Toyota community for so long I think I'd have to trust them.

If you go Yodaman, drop me a PM, and let me know when, we can grab lunch or a beer.

Any suggestions on sources in the Northeast? A friend (a Jeep guy) asked because his uncle seized an engine from ignoring a blown head gasket. The Grooms Engine in TN sounds good - any updates on how it is working for you?
