Memphis water plant.

Is it true Memphis sits on an aquifer of some of the best water in the US?
It is, one of the largest in the country. The water they pull out of the ground is actually clean enough to send straight out, but there is a good bit of iron, so the aerate it and the run it thru a sand filter just to catch the iron, then hit it with a little chlorine and send it on its way. The running line was that they weren't water treatment plants, just iron removal plants. They have a total of 10 plants, varying in capacity from 1.5 million gallons per day (MGD) up the 35 MGD with a total treatment capacity of 270 MGD. We toured 2 plants one built in 1927 and one built in 1913. It was pretty d@mn cool to see how they do things down there compared to how we do it over here.

The old high service buildings, where the finished water is pumped out into the system, used to all run on steam. They've since been all changed, but they left that old steam compressor because it was such a neat relic. There was another one that sat next to it in the day.
