Moab thoughts.

These are all random, but it is fresh on my mind so I am just going to toss this stuff out.

Moab is hot and dry. It was April and it was super hot. There is very little if any shade on the trails. A bikini top will be 100% mandatory for those with soft tops or you will roast. If you have a rig with a/c....bring it. We saw a rattle snake, scorpions and spiders along the trails. Keep a sharp eye out when you are running around out there.

Make sure your brakes, cooling system and fuel system are in top shape. If you can't keep the truck running on a steep angle, Moab will be a real pain in the ass for you.

Rear driveshaft ujoints take a BEATING here. Lots of ledges that will take a bump to get up. It is a move you will get very familiar with, the "Moab Bump" If you miss it, you will often roll back on the rear axle and if you don't get out of it you will roll, break an axle or both (like this guy)

Keep the weight out of the truck in the rear as much as possible. We should not be running anything that will need extra tools and most trails we will have a truck/trailer fairly close to leave the heavy spares in.

Early in this planning process, I mentioned to a Utah local and friend who has spent endless time in the Utah desert that you all were planning a summer trip. The conversation went something like this.

"They're coming to Moab at the end of June."

"On purpose?"

"Yes. They're from Mississippi. They're used to hot weather."

"I'm from Utah. That's insane."

And this didn't really factor in your pigment-free leader. :D

Meh. You'll be fine.

I had the same conversation with my Uncle from Grand Junction on Wednesday night.

There is a great mix of trails at Moab that are LONG days and short days. Some trails like Behind the Rocks are long and the egress road is even longer. Pritchett is only 4.4 miles long but it takes you 1.5 hours to get home.

With the heat of the summer on us during our trip, I am going to suggest that we get an early start each day. This way, we can get back, take a break or dump off passengers and then head back out for a afternoon/sunset trail.

Moab Rim, Hell's Revenge, Cliff Hanger and Fins and Things are all short, close trails that we can use as fillers while we are there to get the biggest bang for our travel buck.

If we keep a good pace each day with our main trails, we will be fine. I went on trails with 50-60 rigs at EJS this week and if the trail lead did their job, it was not an issue. The shortest, easiest trail we ran (Cliff Hanger) was the longest, most cumbersome day because the leaders sucked. The hardest trail we ran was the fastest moving because we kept up the pace.

For what it's worth, I actually do think you'll be fine and then some. Trip of a lifetime, great group of people, unbelievable part of the country. Wish I could tag along.

Wheel at night. Look at postcards in the motel lobby during the day. Problem solved.

My friends from Texas go every year in August. We will be fine. That said, I will be LOVING my a/c in the 80.

Food.

Town has a ton of great places to eat. I went to a low end Mexican place that was cheap and good. I went to a high end Mexican place that was not cheap and good. I went to the Moab Diner for Bfast 2x and it was just OK. Brewery was good, beer was good and the food was OK. Pizza Joint/Buffet had awesome cold beer and excellent pizza. All can handle BIG groups.

I suggest Bfast at the KOA, Lunch on the trail and Dinner in town. Shops stay open late. Ice cream place is kick ass. There is a grocery store in town. Beer is 3.2 unless you get it hot at the Liquor store. That does not matter to me, but it will some of you guys.

KOA is a good place on the south side of town. About 4 miles from the main part of town and the City Grocery.

Man, these pics are amazing.

Alright. For the tweaks in the schedule.....with a bit more detail.

Sunday afternoon.....Cliff Hanger. This trail has a beautiful west facing vista. It is short and a great warm up trail for Moab. The only hard part is on the way back out and it can be winched easily. (you go back out the way you go in)

Monday - Poison Spider Mesa, Golden Spike, Gold Bar Rim. For those that are on this run that want a little more at the end of the day, you can split off and run Rusty Nail. This trail will turn off Gold Bar Rim and loop back to Golden Spike at the crack. This is a long rough day without the Rusty Nail part so plan on it. It is a great way to start Moab. You will see it all on this run.

Tuesday - Hell's Revenge in the morning. Short, SUPER fun trail with bypasses around all the silly stuff. Head up to Arches National Park in the tow rigs and check it out. Evening run to Moab Rim. This way the kids and passengers can opt out on some riding and hit the town or the pool.

Wednesday - Elephant Hill. This is an all-day event. Plan on towing down if you are driving a 40. It is about 65 miles from the KOA to the trailhead. The trail is a 15 mile 4 hour round trip so we won't be as tired from the trail. The drive to and from is not bad. We can stop at The Hole in the Wall on the way back and do the tourist thing.:)

Thursday - Behind the Rocks. Long day. Fun Day. We will be able to make it through without a problem with our group. Straps on the backs of the rigs at White Knuckle Hill. Sand Dunes for those inclined to play on the way out. The gravel road out is 15 miles long and sucks IMO but it is part of it.

Friday - Porcupine Rim and Fins and Things. We will head up to the Sand Flats Area and play on these two trails as time allots. Most of us are leaving on Friday. These are quick and fun with bail outs all along the way if we get short on time. Close to town so our passengers can stay or go.

Action packed week.

Who is ready?

Pictures are fantastic. Can't wait to get there!

Great schedule Grog. It is going to be a great trip!

I expect a complete write up and pics for an article in TT when we get back!

i'm all for it!!!! how many more days till we leave?! :bounce:

I can't wait to do this. 8 weeks to go.....

BTW, on Pritchett, I watched identical Jeeps do the identical climbs and BFG KM2's were the best tires for traction of the tires I watched other than the sticky Krawlers.

Lenny, when are you getting yours?
