Hey All,
I have 1999 lx470. A couple of months ago, I got the brake alarm and ABS light and pretty much lost all brakes. My cruiser has been parked since. I’m finally getting around to getting quotes to replace it. The first shop I called here in San Diego, a well-known Land Cruiser shop, quoted me $3,500-$4,000. This seems really high to me. The parts should be around $ 1,500 –$1,750, so that means labor is more than $ 2,000?

What are other people paying? Am I missing something?

If you have a garage or appropriate area... maybe consider a mobile mechanic. It's not a difficult job for the average mechanic. Book time for this job is 4-5 hours. If you can source all the parts and just pay a mobile mechanic for labor, you might be able to save a lot of money. Shops make money on parts too so the price is retail or more.

One thing you might consider is whether or not they’ll perform the abs bleed.

Ive read that its best to use toyota brake fluid and thats what i used because well… thats what the gurus said.

I just completed mine in my driveway. $1350 for the part, $80 for fluids, replacement gasket and a new ABS pressure sensor plug (fun 2000 model year issue with the oval plug and triangular new sensor). It took me about 6 hours over 2 weekends in my driveway to remove, reinstall, flush and bleed the brakes. I am by no means an expert mechanic but overall it was very simple. The only issue I am still facing is getting the ABS module bled. I will have to take it to the dealership for that and expect a bit in labor from the dealer to do that.

You can 100% do it yourself.

Did it myself on '98 LC. Just got to take your time on it. Hiddengamer7 explained well - that was about the same process I used and same cost I encountered. Bleeding brakes was toughest part to me. Attached is cheat-sheet I got from a guy named Luis via IH8MUD that took the time to put together and send to me. Hope it helps you. That was about 9 years ago...

Found this link for rebuild - not sure if same part number but figured I would share info:

Thanks so much! I really appreciate all the info. I’m going to look into some other options. I used to do most of my own maintenance but time has been at a premium lately. Thanks again!
