This isn’t about protecting from underside impacts.

Far too many have encountered mutilated plastic oil filter caps that were over-torqued to the point the ribs were broken off. Usually the second owner who chose to change their own oil versus dealer. Many other Toyota/Lexus models use the metal one.. for some reason they decided to use this plastic one on the V8s. Mine was fairly mutilated and a reason I went with the metal one and adhered to not over-tightening it. I could have perhaps gone with a plastic one but IIRC.. in the day the plastic one cost more than the metal one. That may be different today….I haven’t priced lately.

I’d only use the OEM versions and not the 3rd party ones.

I never understood the utility in this. Someone school me.

The filter is so tucked up you'd have to be climbing a waterfall with no skids for it to have an impact. Is well above the sway bar in a 4” wide opening 6-8” above the frame rail… which should have a skid bolted to it.

Any reported actual documented failures to motivate this mod?

I thought about this but if you protect against plastic you might introduce metal shavings or worse, the cheap after market spring could ruin you if the oil bypass doesn’t open correctly when needed.
it's more about the plastic oem version being torqued on too tight and being damaged when trying to wrench it off, which is what happened to me.
The use of a metal version gives peace of mind that it won't be damged as easy upon removal.
However, if you have a compentent technician do the job or better yet, do it yourself, this should never be an issue.

My biggest issue with it is that the plastic one sticks in the housing wrench every-time due to dirt. Now I always just wipe a little oil in the wrench before and it comes right out.

Im surprised these get over torqued at all. The first time I changed my oil I mixed up the torque settings and cranked the filter to 30lbs. It was nowhere near cracking but leaked like crazy. I guess the jiffy lube guys don’t let it run for a few minutes to make sure its not leaking?
