Hi All,

Just changed over my winter tires for summer rubber and bought the Cooper STT's 33x12.50XR15

Thought I'd start a long term review where I evaluate these so l'll be commenting on these over the course of their life.

Tires are mounted on 15x8 Eagle's and they were mounted at 168624km.

I run 35 psi on highway

Tread depth is 11/16th's and it will be interesting to see how much they compress when the weather and the tires heat up.

I chose the Cooper STT after a really successful run with the Cooper ST in the same tire size. I put over 80,00KM on those and they have about 1/4 inch tread block left.

I then went to the Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ and with about 20,00 km on them, I lost 2/3 of the tread depth, and I couldn't keep them balanced. Lots of chunks out of the tread block from running on logging roads. They weren't bad on rock and rather dismal in the mud.

First impressions of the STT is that they about as quiet as the Mickey's and ride comfort is great with no wobble of loud humming. Conversation is easy I hear more noise from the roof rack.

The tread design extends far down the 3-ply sidewalls for greater sidewall protection and puncture resistance. It looks like I'll have a little less difficulty climbing out to ruts. They are also close to a D rating (C I) and it think this is becaus it has a 3 ply carcass construction

Not as many plys as with the Toyo MT as its not an E rated tire but for price and for the fact that the E's would be a very stiff on road ride, I went with my positive experience with Coopers after running their winters as well.

Something I really found interesting is that they are more comfortable than my 235x85xR16 winters

And they look friggin awesome on the truck

Cheers,

John

be interesting to see how you go with them, i have cooper ST's on my cruiser, and i would never buy coopers again, mine are chipped to all hell, they are quiet on road though,

Coopers dont have a great name in oz. Not they are such a bad tyre, its that the advertising builds them into something they are not .
Coopers are famous for reneging on warranty because you took them off road LOL
That chipping seems to be fairly common especially when used in desert conditions

Yo John,

Those look great......lets go get-em dirty.

Hi Marlin,

Getting these out and in use is the whole point. Let's figure out Apex.

You will like them. I know I do.

Regarding your roof rack -
do you have any idea what mpg penalty it is costing you?
what size tubing is it made out of ? assuming its a custom made rack.

Not sure on the Fuel mileage and I've never really worried about that based on the Accessories I want. However, I did go with lighter schedule 40 aluminum pipe and aluminum flatbar for the platform (pipe's about 1.5 inches I think) and the bars are thule. Strong enough for me to walk over.

I did the same for my 60 series but used aluminum flatbar riveted directly to the Thule bars

Running the 1hz I get about 580km on 75 liters commuting

Updating. Ran the tires to Vancouver from the Okanagan at highway speed and up to 130kmh. Basically 4 hours of highway driving. Truck ran straight, now wobble or rythmic vibrations. Kind of normal for a set with 1000km on them

Something I have noticed though, under hard braking (traffic congestion and not paying attention), the truck wandered and you could hear the lugs. Didn't have to brake hard enough to lock up

The road wasn't rutted from traffic. I usually get some wandering in those conditions with any of my 12.50's so expect it. Didn't expect it on level road though. Not dangerous and I didn't feel out of control but interesting enough.

Cheers,
John

I've had cooper stt's on my 74 for the last 2.5 years. They are almost worn out but have done @ 80,000 k's. Good valve out of a set of tyres. Went 4wdriving last week and they performed great even though the tread is only a couple of mm from the wear indicator. Probably will get them again but in 10.5 instead of 12.5. It may help to improve the steering.

Had the truck in snow yesterday about a foot and half high. Bogged quickly so I can tell you these are not suitable.

I also had them on packed snow over blacktop. Had to reduce speed significantly as the truck wanted to wiggle.

So I know that I'm going back to my winters next fall but that wasn't a surprise.

Cheers,

John

Hi Chet, No I didn't air down. I was trying to maintain highway speed as I was going over the Coke. Packed snow was intermittent but I did pull off and tried deeper snow on the side of the road. I'm interested in trying your suggestion though. Running at 35 psi right now.

The roof rack is a custom build using Thule bars as the base and fastened to the roof gutters. I attached the Thule bars going to the rear with aluminum gussets that I riveted to the Thule bars going across the cab. The platform is bolted with stainless carriage bolts onto the Thule bars

The aluminium platform was scavenged of a rack I had made for the truck but was badly engineered by the fabricator. He was after pretty and not functional. I thought different and cut it apart to suit the set up you were looking at.

On my 60 series, I used 4 Thule bars and pop riveted aluminum flat bar to it to create a platform. Simple and effective. The flat bar was 1/4 inch thick by 3 inches.

Cheers,

John

Update at 5497 km

So, I've had the tires for 5500K and they've been in snow, packed snow on blacktop, ice, rain, sand, gravel road at 50km and rock. No mud of consequence yet.

Dislikes: under hard braking on blacktop, I have to be prepared for a lot of wobble and tracking. Feels like braking distance is less as well and I can be sure I'll hear them grumble.

Starting to see scalloping of the treadblock. Leadin edge is about 1/16th less than the back edge. I will rotate them this coming weekend.

Likes: man do they dig! Very aggressive grab on soft sufaces. No chips and I've been travelling gravel roads at speed at 35psi. Tends to want to wander under cornering when on gravel so care an attention is needed. No chips though and I've had them on blast rock as well.

They bag nicely aired down to 20 psi and grip rock well.

Tread depth is about 1/8th less than when I started so they have compressed about 1/8th inch.

Happy with the purchase so far

Interested in knowing how they do off road on snow/ice conditions. I need a new set of tires soon and have been considering the Cooper STT's or the Interco Trxus M/T's.

Damn that is a nice looking RIG.

That tread pattern looks like it would fluff or scollap very quickly especiallky iof you air down then drive on the blacktop and would also not grip if you brake hard in the wet especiallly the rear.

They would also be crap in sand and possibly hence snow.

Gravel they would also be crap as no side grip (and hence wander left/right in corers) and they would slide over the top of the gravel and not down.

A lot of people have huge blowouts on Cooper tyres here in Australia, quite often on gravel, given how much they cost, I don't think I'll ever buy a set.

Glenn BJ74 had the Interco Trxus . The dont balance well because they go out of round.

So far so good for my Cooper STTs , Just a note there are two types of STTs . I have the ArmourTek 3s and they have 12,800kms since new These are the best mud tires I have owned, I cant get stuck @ 10psi
sorry fgor the hi-jack GoFast
