How hard would it be to convert my AC back to R12? The system has been converted to R134A as the conversion fittings are on the compressor.

I have been told once the fittings are on the compressor there is no going back and that I would have to buy new manifold blocks for the top of the compressor if they are available in order to go back to R12 since removing the adapters apparently destroys the R12 fittings.

So what does everyone think? Is it worth it to go back to R12?

Why would you want to go back to R12?
R134a is (almost) just as efficient and not illegal to use.
It is pretty hard to come by R12 now a days and one would loose his certificate if caugt refilling a R12 system in a car.

Have you priced R12 lately? Assuming you can find it? It's like liquid gold.

And yes, it is illegal to refill a converted system with R12 now.

Well I have 21 pounds of R12 so I have enough. I just want a nice AC system since I live in AZ and my 4runner is black.

Well, I converted mine to R143a and it worked great. Until it all leaked out around the compressor shaft. I gave up.

You should sell that R12, you'd be surprised what it's worth. Hot rodders are getting desperate for it these days.

Sorry if this is a hijack, but what does it take to convert over to r134? I have a new compressor and condenser that I need to install and I am still on R12. Will they make me covert when I get the system tested and recharged? Both components came from a denso distributor, but do they still sell R12 compatible components or would these have come set up for R134?

Again sorry for the hijack, just seemed semi-relevant to the topic.

From what I understand the compressor comes setup for R12. So you will need to drain it and then fill with the correct amount of oil. You need to order pag double endcap oil. Also you will need to add the appropriate amount of oil for what ever piece you are replacing such as the evap core or condenser. You will also need get the 134a adapters to put on your compressor. You should also have the system flushed before the conversion. If you want a really reliable system then replace all the o-rings.

By the way if you want to convert then we could trade manifolds. My converted for your R12 manifolds as this would benefit both of us.
