How well does the new "Traction Control" work on the newer Land Cruisers (2005-2006). Is it true that it works as good as a locker, only that a sensor automatically locks the differential as needed - several times per minute if traction is loss on any wheel? Or, is it just a fancy limited slip system? Can you actually do any serious climbing on loose dirt or rock crawling? Last question, can a ARB locker be installed on these newer models.

1. It works extremely well
2. It does NOT lock a differential
3. Yes, you can add lockers
***Do a search on TRAC or Active Trac or Traction Control
***There are awesome threads out there

You may already know this, but the traction control on the LC/LX started back with the 2000 models.
On the 00 models, they call it "Active TRAC Electronic Full-time 4WD" On the 01 thru 06 they call it "Active TRAC 4-Wheel Traction Control".
Most likely the same thing just slightly different terminology.

Hey guys, I'm back.

You wouldn't believe what I've been through... the good news is I've come full circle again and looking at 2005 Cruisers, in lieu of the 2006s. I think the last time I visted this thread gas was still $2.50 per gallon. What a deal!!

I never thought I'd see ethal sell for $3.13/Gal ... when I was pumping gas in the mid-70s it was $.35/Gal.

Anyway, I've noticed several 2005 LCs and a few of its close relatives (2005 GX 470s) are stacking up at dealers. I'm toying (no pun intended) with the idea of walking in and offering $48K cash for a '05 LC. I can find at least 4 sitting at two local dealers. I bet if I had access to view all the inventory in SoCal I could safely say it's a buyers market----and the SUV bubble has finally popped.

Think it's doable? The MSRP is $60,250.

I'm reporting back to say I'm now a proud owner of a new 2005 Land Cruiser. I guess I was overly optimistic with my "walk-in" strategy. Nevertheless, I did manage to work a great deal and snag a real nice leftover for a tad bit lower than invoice.

The details....

Thunder Cloud/Stone

$53,225 + TL

Options Included:
Roof Rack
Floor & Cargo Mats
Navigation System
Restraint System (Head&Side)

Dealer included:
Towing Hitch Receiver
Satellite Feature w/Sirius

I added for my own peace of mind:

$1,495 (7yr/75K Toyota Premium Extended Warranty)

The towing hitch is being installed, when I pick it up I'll post pics....

Thanks to all for your help and assistance.

Congrats! Hope you are happy with what you achieved, the savings are always better in your pocket than theirs. , I've always wondered how many people actually pay the Recommend Retail Price RRP (OZ teminology). My LC 100 2003 TD was RRP $73K plus onroad costs (approx $4K) and I got it down to $66K drive away onroads included.

Percentage-wise, that's about 10% off the sticker for both of you guys (a little better for a990dna, but roughly 10% off). So I guess these two data points can be used to establish a benchmark price on LC's, both in N.A. and overseas?

Jim, you hit the nail on the head. I guess they connected me with a different Fleet Manager at Longo this go around. He exceeded my expectations as far as customer service and price---the finance manager that finished the paperwork told me this particular FM sells 100 vehicles per month. This guy was completely up front and gave me the printout with all the costs, markups, amount of holdback and financial reserve (for lot tax) so I could go off for a few days and study it at my leisure.

BTW: MSRP was $60,654... holdback was $1,106 and the financial reserve was $553.

Tustin Toyota had the same LC about 3 weeks ago... they wouldn't go below $54.7K. It sold two weeks after my inquiry.

Is that Irvine Toyota in the auto center just east of I-5 at Lake Forest drive? My impression is, the dealers there are pricey. I'd imagine you could get a better price at one of the mega-dealers in LA, like Longo in El Monte or the Cerritos auto square.

Back in '03, a friend of mine in Vegas bought a new '03 LC w/ DVD for $53K, which I thought was a pretty good deal since the DVD option is about $3K itself.

I calculate it at about 14% , remember the prices I posted were RRP plus onroads cost, and then I quoted drive away price including onroads. Not having a dig, but it is interesting as I said before, How many people actually pay full price? As I have mentioned before, the turbo diesel is $10,000 dearer than the V8 in OZ, yet in the UK, the turbo diesel is cheaper than the V8 . These prices are all a case of marketing and what the public will wear, and how much competition there is! Same goes for advertised prices.

$53.2K is a good deal. I doubt you could do much better - especially in $oCal.
