35" or 34"
I made a whole lot of phone calls this weekend and tried to get to the bottom of this. I went and talked with the Techs who run both sizes. The guys that run really hard use the 35" with a higher aspect ratio. They cut into the frame, but when the gear and warranty question came up....they didn't really care about it, after all it is their job to repair the FJ. Using the 35" and driving like they do, they always expect to bring their rig in the next Monday to fix something (per them). Concensus was, if you don't have the tools or the giant Toyota stealerhip garage to work on your truck, or the ability to see a problem before it becomes an issue...don't run the 35"'s. They said a 34" with a higher aspect ratio would almost do the same without really having to do to much cutting. Yeah, you loose a half an inch in ground clearance (if that, depending on the tire you get) but your frame is more solid. I left the tires and tread sizes at home, but they gave some good ideas on running either 16 or 17" wheels. I liked the advise, because not one of the upgrades were sold by the stealership.
I am pretty sure I'm gonna take my wheel size down to 16" for more rubber and a wider tread. They gave some good tires for daily drivers as well. Tread agressive enough to climb anything an FJ can climb and also not compromise your MPG to much.
I took this information to a few offroad techs in my area, without letting them know I spoke with the Toy techs and they all (100%) said the same thing.
I guess, if your FJ is paid for do whatever you want...if you owe money on it don't do something that could break the solid frame and the Toy rep for taking a beating. It would really suck to be making payments on a FJ that you can't drive cause you wanted a half inch more clearance.!!
This all based off a 3" lift scenario.
I'm gonna keep looking, cause I am not a 100% convinced on the right combo...but when its said and done it will be right!
