Anyone got some experience with leveling concrete subfloors for hardwood? I've got a couple of spots one in particular that needs about 1/4 inch removed. I talked to RSC at Coors and Paseo and the lady said most people rent the concrete planner but told me I could exchange for the grinder if I wasn't happy.

I tried using my 4.5 angle grinder with a concrete grinding cup and it was taking way to long to make any progress. It's great for finishing but not for removing much thickness.

Any tips or ideas?
 
How big are the spots? I've used a masonry wheel and a diamond wheel with some success for small areas.

The biggest area is 7' long x 1' wide and about .25" high. with a hand full of other spots that are about 3-4' long.

I think I'm going to try the concrete planer
 
How big is the room? What I'm getting at is how much is high and how much is low. Could you float the floor with self leveling compound easier than grinding? Man, I hate that job. The dust is killer.

I was going to mention adding to the existing myself - and at least if you have some high spots the next day you can plane it while it's still relatively soft. I think you can get whirleybird lasers pretty cheap now to set the grade as well.
 
Well got the concrete grinder at RSC instead of the planer as suggested by the repair technician. It's basically useful a for taking down the high ridges at the cracks and not much else :mad: I was hoping to take it down a little more but it will have to do. The rest is up to the leveling compound. I think this machine would work better and faster if it had diamond inserts instead of the carbide? blocks that that load up pretty quick.
I just wonder what they use for exposed aggregate concrete? It's sure as hell not this machine!!!

About to start with the leveling compound for the low spots...When I returned the grinder to RSC they asked how it did. I told them the machine worked fine but didn't do what I needed. After explaining what we were after the manager let me use the concrete planner for FREE!!! :bounce: Which is the machine that we really needed to take down a 1/4 inch...its leaves a ruff texture but I quickly took the texture down with the angle grinder. Sooo maybe in the next few days we'll be ready for the floor to be laid.

I would recommend using RSC (Paseo and Coors) for renting equipment. I'm very pleased with the customer service and were very helpful in make sure we got the job done. :cheers:
