Im heading up to the telluride area next week. I would like to do Imogene, Black bear, Cinnamon, Engineer, and ophir pass. I have a friend coming along in a full size chevy crew cab 4x4. Question is, will he be able to do these trails. I know the wheelbase will be a serious set back on Black Bear, but can it be done. I know its not ideal by any means, just want to know if anyone has seen someone do any of these trails in a long wheelbase vehicle.

thanks.

When I ran them last month I saw one full size Dodge and one full size Chevy do Black Bear and Imogene. They did fine, although multiple backings to make a couple of the turns down Black Bear. I am not sure how the couple of extra feet for a crew cab would affect it though.

While we were out there a few years ago an older couple in a full size Ford SD tried Back Bear, and slid the truck part way off the trail part way down on one of the switch backs and they had to walk down. It had sat up there for a few days before they could get a wrecker company (lots of money) to go get it. In the mean time the truck partially blocked Black Bear creating a dangerous situation for the other wheelers doing the trail. The people that were telling us about it said they contemplated pushing the truck on over the side due to the danger factor it created for other people having to get around it on the switchback. They also said the couple had no business taking that Super Duty on Black Bear.

We heard later on that week the Ford was recovered.

My opinion, the other trails you guys want to go on are fine for your friends full size truck to go, but for Black Bear, probably better off parking the full size for that day.

I've read reports of people backing them down every other switchback.
