I need to paint a new windshield frame for my JDM BJ74.
I called the usually efficient auto paint store to inquire about Toyota Color Code 21M.
The guy could not find that in his computer.

I got that number/code off the VIN plate on the firewall.

Is the store guy wrong, perhaps incompetent, or is this a JDM-to-USA problem?

Anyone have a translation?
Thanks.

I can check this number tomorrow but it sounds wrong to me for a BJ74. The VIN will normally show 2 sets of codes C/TRM colour and trim. Is it a metallic colour ?

Its a JDM to USA problem because it was never sold there new. What year is it?

A paint code in that format usually indicates a tu tone. It does not translate into a single color.

Color is 21M. Trim is FO11 or F011 (Oh or Zero?)

Perhaps the FRP top counts as one of the two-tones?

It's a 1988 BJ74 MNX that looks black. It has faded of course, but I don't think it would be labeled metallic.

I can't tell if the FRP top was sprayed silver(metallic?) at the factory or if someone else did that: roof paint is coming off.

Most FRPs were white. Black and blue (at least) got silver tops.

IF the black is a SOLID color it would be 202. I do not know about the top.

So is there a way to get a handle on what JDM black colors were offered back in '88?
Was 202 the only one and will that pop up correctly on a US database like PPG?

Sorry to be so annoying but I can't drive this thing legally until I get an full inspection, which means getting the new windshield put in, so I need to get the new frame painted....

When your code is put in our system it comes up as two tone.
21M = 148 silver & 204 black

Hope this helps.

There you go....

In addition 204 is a live color in this market.

THAT is what I wanted to hear! Thanks! Once again this community has helped me out where old Google failed.

Yes, the auto paint store says they have the code Toyota 204 and it is Metallic Black. Senior called it right on. Inside the door jamb, un-faded, it does not look very flashy so I think my idea of metallic differs from Toyota's. I was a teen in the 70's, so that's my excuse.
Thanks again!

Most of the big car manufacturers back in the 80's were using large metallic flakes in their paint but Toyota & Datsun (Nissan) were starting to use Mica metallics which were a very fine metallic flake. It's used on a lot of modern cars because it makes a ordinary colour sparkle without been in your face.

I'll try to take and post a photo of an area inside where the sun has not faded the paint.
