Figured I'd document this specific part of my build over here, to accompany my main build thread on another site.
A little backstory, I bought my GX off Copart with a salvage title about two years ago. I've since repaired most of it and it now has a rebuilt title. Never really liked the gross beige dash/trim on top of the nicer tan color. I've priced out doing color swaps, and it just doesn't seem worth it. Cheapest door cards I've found are local, 4 black for $400. But even then they're missing the window switches. I did buy a new black dash from a local dealer during BF.
Then I remembered I have some black BMW leather refinishing dye, and some Colorbond LVP black spray paint. I had done touch-up and refinishing work on my E46 M3 a few years back. So why not use this stuff to change the GX interior color?!
I cleaned, lightly scuffed, wiped down, adhesion promotor, then sprayed the LVP. For the leather I skipped the adhesion promoter and just wiped/dabbed it on with a small sponge.
So far the original beige trim pieces came out really good. The hard plastics came out good, but needs another coat or two. The "woodgrain" trim parts are a little more troublesome. Need to make sure to sand down through the glossy clear coat it has. The leather dye is coming out really good too.
I used up the half can of LVP spray so ordered a few more. $65 for two cans of Colorbond, after shipping.
For now I'm going to do the black on tan GX sport look. But like most projects I do I may go overboard and blacking out the whole interior.
