My clutch is not engaging when my HXJ73 ZX is running. It does engage when the truck is off but as soon as I start it, it will not budge. Just happened tonight.

Does anyone know of a place I can get it fixed in Victoria that wont completely rip me off or suggestions on what could be wrong with it?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you are unable to get it into gear when running?

When you shut if off then can get it into gear?

Clutch master and slave?

Or your clutch is just fried, but they generally do not fail the way you have described.

I had these guys inspect my MR2 for a buyer in Winnepeg when I sold it a few years ago: Marigold Service - Auto Repair & Mechanics - Victoria BC They were nice to deal with, and I see a lot of JDM import vehicles there. I can't really say much more about them, as I do all my work myself. But I'd say they are worth a try.

My bet is either your clutch master or slave has failed (as Rob has suggested); it's really the only thing that will cause a sudden failure like that. Should not be a big expense. You can mention you are from the VI landcruiser club, and maybe they'll treat you better. If they piss you off they piss us all off...lol.

When you depress the clutch pedal does the pedal feel different than normal? Have you checked the level of clutch fluid?

Hi Rob, it does not go into gear at all when the engine is running. Only when the engine is off.

I don't know what a clutch master/slave is...but maybe they aren't talking? The clutch feels very soft and squishy.

My friend Evil took a look and has never run into this problem before.

Thoughts?

GTS - my clutch, as i said above, does feel odd so I will go check my clutch fluid....wherever the hell that is!

I will call marigold tomorrow and see what they have to say, thanks for the suggestion.

It works like a brake system. It uses hydraulic fluid to transfer the force of your foot pushing the clutch pedal to move a release fork in the bell housing.

Yeah, slave or master probably. If its the slave, you shoud be able to see where it's barfed out its fluid on sideof bellhousing.

Had mine fail on the highway. ..had to bounce throttle to even get it out of gear...if I pumped a few times I could manage a shift....
Was fun rrying to make it through town without taking it out of 5th...

Oh lord! So glad this happened in my driveway!

Any luck?

Where in BC? One of us could help diagnose. The repair is easy and we could talk you through it.

Vern and Franken60 have been awesome!!! I am completely out of brake fluid so picking some up tomorrow, doing the steps that Franken60 has outlined and see if I have a leak in the master/slave or both. If that is the issue, got some help lined up. Thank you everyone, I have learned a lot and am so relieved this is not a huge costly fix.

Glad you're getting it sorted, and yeah, a sudden inability to shift, can make you fear all sorts of expensive problems...

Not to hijack, but it's funny, I threw the plates back on my 60 yesterday, and lo and behold, it didn't like resting for a couple months. :bang:

My issue is that the clutch fork isn't staying retracted ( no return spring on mine, which I find a bit weird), if I push the slave in by hand it slowly creeps back out and allows the throwout bearing to lightly touch the pressure plate.

May have been doing it a while, but my throwout bearing is a bit growly at higher rpms now so it howls when it touches.

Is there a return spring inside the bellhousing on the newer h55's? There doesn't appear to be any provision for one on the outside at all.

Anyways, two hose clamps and a spring, and I have a return spring. Hopefully that keeps it quiet until I deal with it. Maybe my master isn't letting the pressure off fully ...

Hm. Just did a search, and apparently the newer ones have no return spring, and the throwout bearing rides on the clutch all the time. seems like unecessary wear to me.

Yikes, good to know about any issues that may pop up!
