Hey guys! My new to me '95 LC has been running great for the past two months of ownership, but starting about two weeks ago I've been getting weird noises coming from the engine bay upon start up. It only lasts a second or so and after it passes the car runs great. I've attached a video of the noise.

Any ideas of what this could be? I've also been hearing similar, although quieter thunks while in park and idling. I'm by no means a mechanic and I'm incredibly anal-retentive about this car so any noise or creak gets my paranoia juices flowing strong, so if this is normal or nothing to be concerned about I'm sorry for wasting y'alls time . Oil was changed a few days ago to Mobil-1 5w-40 turbo diesel and the truck has 133k miles on it, if that helps.

I don't hear a clunk, but you definitely need to get out the shotgun and take care of the geese flying around!

If you're concerned, check for a loose starter or an exhaust leak.

Maybe try a video from under the hood where the clunk would originate.

Could be the exaust system hitting the frame. Upon start up the exaust system will move or vibrate. Get under your rig and move the exaust around and see if it is close to the frame anywhere. Usually it is close to the frame at the rear upper link support for the rear axle. If you have rock sliders that is another spot where there is not much clearance.

Thanks guys! An exhaust leak may be the culprit, I've noticed once in a while I can smell fumes inside the cabin (coming form the air vents I think). That only happens if I start the car within a minute or two of turning it off, though. I'll also check my exhaust to see if it's resting on anything.

You might be smelling fuel vapor from a clogged charcoal canister, do you have pressure when you open the gas cap? Check exhaust having a broken hanger banging around like others have said
