clock display

My 87 bj70 does the same thing. The rig is new to me, and I have not looked into it yet. Hopefully a guru will show us the light. Or at least how to fix the light.

Sometimes the clock lights up and sometimes is does not. It has nothing to do with anything else being on or off. Has anyone here seen this problem and know why it does that?

Do you mean that at a time the display is bright and at other times the display is dim?

If so, that's supposed to be a normal feature with switching the headlights on or of.
When the headlights are switched on the clock go's dim.(night-situation)
With headlights switched off the display is bright.

Mine has no relation to headlights being on or off.

Yes, I understand the normal function of dimming when the light switch is on, and when the clock display does light up correctly it does dim when the lights are on.

The problem, however, is that sometimes the clock does not light up at all when the truck is started.

My clock in my BJ74 was always lite, even with the truck off. Never could find out how to fix it.

I don't know if we are talking about the same clock, but in my HJ60

It's the same circuit that have the cig and some other minor stuff .. in the fuse box it's named as " CIG " circuit.

And the time is still set?
If so it's just the light. This is powered by a separate feed. I don't the connections for you type, but the clock should have four connections.
1. One is live all the time (execpt when the batt's are disconnected.
2. One is ground, all the time.
3. One is live when the engine is running and one is live when lights are on (this one should be the culprit and have a intermittend connection).
4. The last one is the one that takes care of dimming the display at night.
So take your volt/ohm-meter and find nr. 1 and 2.
For 1 set the meter to V and for 2 set it to OHM.
Once you've found them, then to job is to distinguish between 3 and 4.
Set meter to V and find the one that is nr 4 by switching lights off and on.
Now you've also nr 3. Check this one for Voltage and wiggle the wire. There must be a break at some spot.
AFAIK this wire is also connected to the radio-harnass and/or cig lightercircuit (cig lighter works allways?) so look for interruptions in that area as well (Fuse CIG).

If nr.3 has no current, current on nr 4 won't activate the display. All nr 4 does is dim or not.

So you need to get 3 working again.
Have fun !!

John,

if your instrument-panel looks like mine, you'll find screws in the positions indicated by the arrows.
No need to remove the heater, ventilation and airflow knobs.
Once the cover is removed you should be able to get to the clock (and terminals)

Before you go into the wiring loosen the clamp bolts on the battery and make sure you can easily remove the clamps.
Be aware that creating a short can do a lot of damage. So pay attention to bare connectors and things like that.
Best case scenario in case of a short is a blown fuse, so have some spares.
In case the fuse does not blow then the loosened clamps might save the day by disconnecting them though there might be a lot of damage done. So be carefull.

Dude .. great pics, great dash ! I like it .. I wanna have this console ( the top one ) with inclinometers :D

Hej, Tapage,
it's nothing special. Basically stock.... Except for the ARB-switches and the radio.....
The inclinometers look rather impressive but they are very simple. Just a weight on a pivot behind a scale.
I don't trust 'em since the up/downslope indicator showed a descent when I was actually climbing....

I have a Lev - O gauge .. if it accuracy or not ( segs before my rolled I have no chance to see it if it's accuracy or not :grinpimp: ) but it dosen't matter .. yours looks badass !

That's cool !
