Meet at the Divide Philips 66 at 7:45 am. Leave at 8:15 and go to the Rule Ridge parking lot at 8:30. That is where we air down and get a briefing on the latest conditions, areas to patrol, maps etc.

Remember to bring a GMRS radio (we use channel 15-0), recovery gear, winter clothes, tire chains, coffee and lunch.

We do a debrief at 3:30 pm back at Rule Ridge, air up and go home.

If you volunteer the FS Rangers will allow you to cut a tree without buying a permit.

Please reply to this thread if you plan on going on this day.

Attached is a PDF of the Tree cutting area and the FS roads that we patrol.

Another non-typical December weather day. Chilly in the morning warming up nicely. It feels more like an October day than our typical December days. My unqualified guess would be about 60 groups visited our patrol area on this day. There was only 5 UTVs and 1 motorcycle out today. The big group of 12 or so UTVs blasting noise as they sped on the trails have not been seen this year. I spent most of the day looking at old campfire sites and picking up trash and burnt cans. I did turn over a state road sign to the Forest Rangers. There were 8 groups that had kids with them that got Smokey Bear swag. The best part of my day was when I stopped next to a young couple putting a tree on the top of their car. I noticed that the top of the tree was toward the front of the car. I asked them if I could offer a suggestion. Upon positive confirmation, I told them that if they turned the tree around so the bottom of the tree was forward the wind would not be caught in the branches damaging the tree. The guy thanked me and I moved on. About 15 minutes later I saw them driving down the road with the tree still on the roof with the top of the tree forward and the branches belled out as a big parachute. That gave me a chuckle to wonder what the tree would okk like when they got home.
