They were so high!

Dude!!!!

lets see one sammy with charger vs 3 jeeps and a support crew and huge bugdet. and the samurai went farther and is probably a 20 years old.
I believe the equation goes for every 1000 feet above 10,000 ft past you lose 7-10 horsepower. a stock 1.6 has 80 hp. a supercharged 1.6 has maybe 120 hp. i believe at around 20,000 ft it had 20 hp!

The turbo is effectively raising atmospheric pressure. You could try to get the same result with a naturally aspirated motor with stupid high compresion ratio but it just wouldn't happen. It doesn't matter how much HP you start out with if you run out of oxygen. 20HP applied to a moving Sami with gearing isn't that bad.

Hence the record.

support crew or not... dude headed up with a tiny-ass spare tire! JEEBUS!

My truck barely moved at 13K feet crossing Monarch pass. Bought some 83 octane and that helped.

Sped up the burn. Makes sense.
