i have a button in my care it says center diffs. it automatically engages in low and i can put it on in high. what exactly does it do?

care = car? If it is just in your care, I will take it off your hands! :D

It locks your center diff...

Search...there is plenty of information about this. If you have a 93 or later truck, some p.o. must have installed this. If you have a 91-92...it is stock.

If you have a 93 or later you might want to also search about the 7 pin mod.

That will keep you busy for a while! :D

i have a 94 and it came stock it was an extra option does it act as a locker?

If you have a 94 and it is stock, then you do not have ABS. There are a few of these trucks out there...you just got "lucky" I guess. I rear end is also different.

Yes it acts as a locker...but is not the same as the FF/RR lockers that came stock on some.

How do you "know" it came stock? What year? What country?

Jack, my understanding with the 80 series is that it's possible to have three wheels spinning in slippery conditions, without any locks engaged. The centre diff lock (when button is pressed) reduces this to two (one front, and one rear). This is your first line of defence against getting stuck in the rough stuff. The diff locks (normally a rotary knob with FF / RR written on it) reduce the amount of slippage even further, so that all four wheels are locked and rotating at the same speed regardless of corners and traction.

That's the idiot-guide explanation... there are better write-ups elsewhere on this forum.

The locker center switch was standard in all non ABS 80's from 91>... The ABS 80's (starting 1992 or 1993 depending on where you look) added a VC to the center differential. When Toyota added this VC tothe locker diff, the motor driven locker was still present in the transfer case, but the CDL switch was deleted (tho the harness is still present - see CDL switch and 7pin mod), and the low range auto locked the CD via the motor drive locker. In stock trim (80 with ABS) this VC allowed high range to have a locking center diff AND abs when driving in low cf conditionis.

The CDL switch and 7pin mod does the following. With CDL switch off, the ABS is active in high and low range, and the VC is the only locking device for the center diff. The auto (electronic) lock feature (and ABS-disable) of low range is also disabled (the actual pin 7 mod), which allows ABS to operate in low range, as well as, allowing one to maneuver trailers or tight spaces in low range without a mandatory locked diff.

So 80's with ABS (I believe this was also the switch to 4 wheel discs), actually have 2 separate locking devices for the center diff: Motor driven dog clutch locking (low range), and VC (low and high range - based on driveshaft speed differences with torque applied). IMO, the locking CDL switch with the 7pin mod gives maximum driver control and benefits of the 2 devices.

why would I be "lucky" if I have this...I am one of the "few" that has a center diff w/o ABS and no rear/front lockers?

FYI RE: ABS OPTION on 94 FZJ80

I've seen a 93 with and without ABS, and a 94 without ABS, as one would expect for a factory option. My '94 FZJ80 actual Moroney sticker lists the ABS option (over the 35,298.OO USD MSRP) exactly as:
"OPTIONAL INSTALLED EQUIPMENT
ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM 1,180.00"

This would lead me to believe that not all 80 trucks had ABS, and that 'with ABS' hardware and software, you also got the VC center diff lock in addtion to the normal electric locker center. Slee FAQ also lists HF2AV (V for viscous vs HF2A non Viscous 91>) as a 1993 intro with Full Floating rear Axle and optional 4wheel disc brakes with ABS (read: ABS option got you these goodies installed: 4 wheel discs, full floating rear axle, and HF2AV Transfer case). This would also lead me to believe that the HF2A could be upgraded/interchanged with a HF2AV with little or no additional changes.

ABS, which included 4 wheel discs and a FF rear axle, was optional in the 93-94 model years and became standard in the 1995 model year (In the US anyway).

Almost all 93-94 vehicles were ordered by TMS USA with ABS. The independant distributors such as Gulf States brought more in without ABS. Almost all the odd-ball combinations that I have personally seen, such as no ABS, no sunroof, no rear seats, ETC have come out of Texas.

quick question
since I am the third owner of my vehicle
how do I know if I have ABS
I do have the center diff lock

Do you have an ABS light that comes on at start up then goes off?

Do you have rear disk brakes? or drums?
