Im into a, new to me, 88 BJ74 - starting to do mods/fix some of the mods completed by to PO. Found something i don't know what to do with.

Installed on the No. 4 air intake hose is some contraption... according to the website it contains rare Earth metals, which reduce emissions and improve fuel economy. Can anyone shed some light on this product? Should it stay, or should it go?

My '88 BJ74 also came with one from Japan. I took it out and dumped it because I found very fine white residue in my intake tube. Don't know if it was going to do any harm...and who knows how long it was there with the previous owner (and the engine was still running great)...but I wasn't going to take the chance.

Stone, that was the Fairy dust that they put in there along with the rare earth metals.
How could that be bad for the engine?

The white stuff was supposed to be released into the intake. It is, apparently, cerium oxide.

CELCAT International LTD - Emission Control Systems

Cerium oxide is a component of a catalytic converter, so this essentially achieves the same thing, but by dumping CeO2 through the combustion chamber itself, rather than just blowing exhaust gas over it. On the one hand, CeO2 is also used as a glass polish, so its certainly abrasive, but if its fine enough maybe it'd be safe? There are quite a few scholarly articles about this technique, although by a relatively narrow group of authors.

Emissions reduction of high and low polluting new technology vehicles equipped with a CeO2 catalytic system

Organization for the Master Plan and Environmental Protection of Thessaloniki, 4 Angelaki St., 54636 Thessaloniki, Greece

Abstract

The efficiency of a catalytic system that provides the vehicle combustion chamber with an adequate amount of cerium oxide (CeO2), without affecting the operational parameters of the engine, has been studied for pollutant emissions reduction. New technology gasoline engine passenger cars, equipped with this catalytic system, have been driven on their normal route by the same drivers, in order to obtain the same traffic conditions and the same driving mode, as far as possible. These vehicles were tested for CO and HC emissions before and after the installation of the catalytic system. The new technology passenger cars examined have been divided into two categories using as criterion the level of their initial emissions (before the installation of the CeO2 catalytic system). The two categories are: (a) high polluting cars with CO and HC emissions above the implemented standards; and (b) low polluting cars with emissions below the standards. Both car categories equipped with the CeO2 system, present important reduction of the pollutant emissions. The results are interpreted statistically and they are correlated with other studies.

Scam,throw them in the bin.

Installed on the No. 4 air intake hose

Do you mean number 4 fuel injector line?
