Hey all,

My old '88 3ZE powered 4Runner, now driven by my dad, has an intermittent check engine lamp coming on. Pulled the code and it's flashing twice, so code 2 which what I saw from a quick Google search was the air flow meter. I was working away from my garage so I did not have a manual with me to confirm.

Anyway, my question is, has anyone had this code before on their 3VZE truck or runner? Did you fix it by swapping in a new/used air flow meter?

The truck runs perfect otherwise and unfortunately it's no longer available for diagnosis. He's out of town so next time I see it will be not for another month and I'll only have it for a short time so I'm thinking of getting and eBay air flow meter on the cheap and popping it in.

FYI, the intake hoses are perfect, and even when they were not the never caused the CEL to come on.

Google has failed you... The flash pause flash stands for 11, all the trouble codes are 2 digits.

Code 11: ECU (+B) Momentary interruption of power to ECU. Check ignition switch, ignition switch wires main relay, main relay wiring, and ECU...

!!!

Excellent! I was just dropping a car off at the garage where all my stuff is and I failed to grab the manual! Since this is a recurring code I'd imagine it's an ongoing issue but oddly the truck seems to be fine.

Could you give me some hints on hunting this down? I presume the ECU is where they usually are, pass side kick panel along with a compliment of relays as well. What should I be looking for? I've not even thumbed the manual yet to see what sort of tests there might be for the ignition switch, etc. Should I be doing wiggle and pulling tests on the harness? Could this also be that little power distribution box under the hood by the battery? Isn't there a bunch of relays in that thing too?

Thanks in advance,

Jason

Yes, sounds like you're on the ball. My first bet is that the main relay or the ignition switch has dirty contacts... Unless the truck is in rough shape, then I'd maybe look at the wiring first... Hook up a test light to the +B terminal at the ECU with the key on and start wiggling the harnesses... If the light goes out you'll know.

Cool...when the truck is back in town I'll check it out and re-post my findings. Truck is a little crusty, but not super bad.

Thanks for the help-

Really? Why would disconnecting the CEL make it better? I've never noticed any think when mine was out.
Mine runs good but still looking for any issue that would cause it to have a loss of power. She revs up fine but the RPM's are up on throttle it just seems to top out at such a short time when she use too push ya back in the seat. The seafoam did take away the hesitation and starting problems.

The recommendation was to connect a test light (Icepick light for diagnostics) to battery positive, and checking to see if there's a loose connection inside the harness.
SES light would still remain on, and un-tampered.

Sounds like your issues would steer you toward a throttle position sensor.
I would also check your spark plugs.
Good luck!
