Forgive me for this potentially stupid question, but I have a factory manual transmission with factory front and rear lockers, but no CDL switch. I'm assuming it automatically locks the CDL when I shift into low-range. Am I correct in thinking this, and should I install a CDL switch?

yes that's how they are from 95-97. you can add a switch if you want, it depends on what your going to use the truck for if you need the switch or not.

The added ability to engage the CDL in high range (think snow), performing the pin 7 mod allows you to use the CDL switch for low range (cancels the automatic engagement in low range).
