Hi all, I’m refurbishing a used CDL actuator I bought. Couple quick questions.

See picture, should these little metal “blocks” at the base of the winding be soldered in? Secondly for the worm gear, it’s pretty dry, is a white lithium grease the right grease?

@NeverFinis is correct.
Those "blocks" are commutator brushes. They are spring loaded and fit into the channels on either side of the brushes in the picture.
It helps to have an additional hand to keep the brushes retracted against the springs when installing the rotating assembly. Toothpicks work well.
DON'T LOSE THE SPRINGS
You should also take the time to clean the commutator contacts where the brushes ride. I've always used a pencil eraser for that, but I'm old and crusty.

Also curious, does anyone know which way to orient the can gear that engages the CDL within the transfer case? I posted in a separate thread but long story short, it’s locked in H and L but shows no light (all diagnostics point at the actuator being bad). So to put it back in, does anyone have guidance on how to orient the can gear in the picture?

It has been awhile for me but I don't recall any difficulty when I worked on my CDL.

Lock the t-case by hand.

From memory, remove that gear , lock the t-case, and put the gear back in. I don't remember an orientation with that gear.

Confirm by checking that front and rear flanges are locked together.

Make sure CDL is locked before installing.

Then test CDL for locking and unlocking the t-case. I mean, confirm your CDL works before doing anything...

Thx. Yeah i I was trying to figure out his to lock it by hand - which way does it move?

hahaha fair I should have said, verify its locked without taking it off the trans lift

I believe, when locked, with a hand on each flange, rock one back and forth and you should feel/hear a clunk in the other.

It is harder in unlocked mode due to the viscous coupler, but in unlocked mode, one should be able to rotate one flange in the opposite direction of the other.
