With almost 10,000 mi and 6 mo on oil change, this is what my catch can cough.
The first pic is what was drained from the can at oil change.

I assume that its water on the bottom and oil/water mix on top. I didn't think water and oil mixed, could it be water and gasoline mix?
I have see this before in my Mack semi when I drained the air tanks, a cream like warm custard would drain out.

that looks a lot like water that is mixed into the oil. it should clear up over time.

oil on the top mixture in the middle and slug on the bottom.

if you do a oil change, wait a week then take a sample again and let it settal then look again. i think you may have a small water leak into your oil.

Are you using water. does the mixture smell like petrol

Jono PS im not a mechnaic just my throughts

kurt- interesting mix. I'll start collecting my catch can contents for comparison. From what I've been empying from the catch can, it looks like the darker oil/sludge near the top of your settled out mixture. What type of catch can is that, anyway?

That's what mine looks like in the winter. In the summer it's just oil, but when the weather turns cold, I get that ugy foamy sludge.

The catch can is a water separator for a diesel fuel tank.

My summer results is just oil and this is the first winter use of a catch can.
I was thinking that the cream was from the extended mileage but MTJohn makes me think its the extra moister from winter.

If you're not seeing it during the warmer months, my swag would be that is condensation from the heating and cooling cycles in this cold weather. In the warmer months, the ambient air temp and underhood temps are enough to burn that condensation off?

Is that collection can connected to your PCV system?

Can you supply pics of the install? Where / How you have it mounted, etc...

Where did you get the can from?

The catch can is a diesel/water separator, the kind you put on a diesel fuel tank like at a farm. I got it at a farm store.
I hooked it up to the PCV system. Ran the hosed over to the air cleaner and mounted the separator on the air cleaner with bungee cords.
